I've been using Firefox for 25+ years, always keeping it up to date. I've been a customer of CIBC Bank for 20+ years and using their online website since its beginning. Last week I've been unable to login to my accounts without going thru an inconvenient and time-consuming telephone code procedure every time. Previously, this procedure had been in place only occasionally as a secondary method of identification.
CIBC advised changing my anti-tracking and cookie settings. After trying all the alternatives, there was no change. Checked out Edge browser, and it was the same. Checked out Firefox and Edge on a second computer and it was the same. Installed the Chrome browser, and it works fine!
No problems accessing any other website. Anyone ever experienced this? Any suggestions?

Did they mention this:
Firefox recently rolled out "Total Cookie Protection" to more users. This limits how sites can use "third party" cookies, meaning cookies from different websites than the one you see in the address bar. When an institution needs to share authorization across servers, Total Cookie Protection may cause that to fail, so the second server sends you back to sign in.
You can make exceptions to this feature when needed. More info in the following articles:
- Introducing Total Cookie Protection in Standard Mode -- individual site exceptions
- Total Cookie Protection and website breakage FAQ -- if individual site exceptions aren't working, see "Can I disable Total Cookie Protection without disabling Enhanced Tracking Protection?"
Thanks for your reply. That is one of the many tracking and cookie alternatives that I tried, without success. The result is the same, whether it's on or off.
I guess it's possible that they changed their code in a way that only works correctly on Google Chrome. Considering the nature of the site, it's hard to recommend getting too adventurous in the investigation.
Right, CIBC is a huge bank with a large IT dept. Nothing changed at my end, so it's up to them to fix it, if they can. Meanwhile, we use Chrome as a work-around.
I do know some banking now require a txt to phone verification for security purposes. They could be using that for upcoming changes.
Thanks, but CIBC does admit it should not be happening EVERY time one logs in. Also, I seem to be the only one with the problem, out of millions of customers.
If you use extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) that can block content (Adblock Plus, NoScript, DuckDuckGo PE, Disconnect, Ghostery, Privacy Badger, uBlock Origin) always make sure such extensions do not block content.
- make sure your extensions and filters are updated to the latest version
Firefox shows a purple shield instead of a gray shield at the left end of the location/address bar in case Enhanced Tracking Protection is blocking content.
- click the shield icon for more detail and possibly disable the protection
You can check the Web Console for relevant-looking messages about blocked content.
You can try these steps in case of issues with webpages:
You can reload webpage(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.
- hold down the Shift key and left-click the Reload button
- press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
- press "Command + Shift + R" (Mac)
Clear the Cache and remove the Cookies for websites that cause problems via the "3-bar" Firefox menu button (Settings).
"Remove the Cookies" for websites that cause problems:
- Settings -> Privacy & Security
Cookies and Site Data: "Manage Data"
"Clear the Cache":
- Settings -> Privacy & Security
Cookies and Site Data -> Clear Data -> [X] Cached Web Content -> Clear
Start Firefox in Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration or userChrome.css is causing the problem.
- switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Themes
- do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Troubleshoot Mode start window
Well you've certainly supplied many things to try - thanks. Just checked the page in question and saw this extra bit on it:- Online account opening will be unavailable until 7:00 am ET due to maintenance. Thank you for your patience. Maybe CIBC has found something; more tomorrow!
