Long delay until Homepage is opened

more options

There is a large delay between when I open Firefox, and when it finally loads my homepage (Bing.com). To help troubleshoot, I installed Wireshark, and performed a packet capture.

At timestamp 13.547047 seconds, it sends a query for detectportal.firefox.com. At this point we know the browser is open and functioning.

At timestamp 19.768820 it sends a query for www.bing.com. It's taken over 6 seconds, before firefox even tries to load my homepage.

What is it doing for those 6 seconds? How do I get it to load Bing at timestamp 13.547048?

Try to disable detectportal check, if you don't need it.

Enter about:config in the address bar and set network.captive-portal-service.enabled = false.

You can create a new profile as a quick test to see if your current profile is causing the problem.

See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.

Thanks TyDraniu and cor-el!

I've disabled the detectportal check. If it doesn't fix, it, I'll try a new profile.

Disabling the detectportal check didn't fix the issue.

I created a new profile, and the problem persisted.

QQ: what activity have you been able to track occurring simultaneous to the delay? Multiple tabs on loading or Activity occurring in multiple browser windows simultaneously without command?

The issue is only when I open the browser up, after it's closed. It doesn't happen every time, maybe 60% of the time. Is there any way to view logs of what Firefox is doing, from when it opens up?

I ran a network trace with Wireshark. I've filtered it to the source IP of the machine in question, and only DNS requests.

You can see firefox looking for the detectportal, then settings, then my profile, accounts, and then it just waits 5 seconds and does nothing.

Are you using Sync because Firefox seems to be connecting to Sync about that time ?

You can open about:sync-log via the location bar to see if recent Sync logs are available. You can upload the file to a website like Pastesite if you can't post the content of the file in a reply.

It could be due to bug 1567863. In that case you can expect improvements in version 103.

^: it looks that bug 1567863 is about issues with local storage (cache validation), so if this were that bug then a new fresh profile shouldn't have this problem.

Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support to see if that has effect.

cor-el - Yes I'm using Sync, but I tried it on a new profile and had the same issue. It's actually on all my computers, including one I've never setup Sync on.

TyDraniu - I sure hope that's the problem and solution.
