I need to reorder Firefox windows on the taskbar badly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Also it would be useful to have custom titles. Both things should persists after PC restart. I tried couple programs, but they don't work. Devs said: position of Firefox window on the taskbar is store in Firefox and their program has no way of remembering that! Also windows get randomly shuffled each time, it is impossible to use like this. It takes me forever to find right window. It is annoying the hell out of me. How Firefox dev team doesn't fix something that basic??? This is so stupid...

Please tell me there is some solution...

The window order in a restored session has been more stable in the past two years than in the old days. It seems to mostly track the order the windows were originally opened, with occasional glitches. I assume that this is based on your session history file, and there is no built-in way to modify that file (in fact, it's compressed, so it's not easy to even view its contents, although I have a tool for that if needed).

If Firefox's built-in session management doesn't meet your needs, there are some session management extensions you could consider. Maybe when you restore your session with these you can control the window order?? These are the ones I'm aware of that you might investigate/try out:

Use database storage:

Use bookmark storage:

(Bookmark storage is more robust in that Firefox backs it up regularly. However, having the extra data show up when you are searching your bookmarks may be annoying.)

Regarding window titles, you could take a look at this extension and see whether it helps: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/window-titler/

How many windows do you have open because it sounds that you may not be using tabs, but prefer windows and have quite a few ?

Hahaha windows currently not much like 6-7. When I work I have easily over 1000 tabs and multiple windows... I need to be able to reorder windows on the taskbar and give them custom titles. It is such a basic logical practical thing, one would thought Firefox devs would get that... And before say it is extreme cause use, work today requires a lot of tabs... UI needs update, even study says so: https://bigthink.com/technology-innovation/tab-overload

OK so usually after 1-2 answers thread becomes dead, anyone has addon for persistent reordering Firefox's windows on the taskbar, which is open source and with more users preferrably? As devs of 3rd party programs say: this information is stored in Firefox and 3rd party programs have no way of accessing it/remembering it!

If you have a session restoration extension you like, why not ask the author for this feature? In other words, you would set Firefox to start with your home page instead of using the built-in restore feature. Then you would trigger the extension to restore each window in the order you prefer.

I don't think an extension can directly manipulate the order of already-open windows. But I tested one idea:

I had 16 windows open. I closed the one that was second on the Taskbar. Then I restored it (Ctrl+Shift+N) and Windows placed it at the end of the list. Then I did a standard exit/restart of Firefox, and that position was maintained.

Assuming that holds for everyone, at least in theory, an extension could choreograph the closing and restoration of windows to modify the order. However, that may be inconvenient in real life because the tabs in a restored window need to be individually restored when you click/activate them. So an add-on along these lines may fall short of improving your life.

Weird because position on taskbar is saved in firefox said: devs of third party taskbar programs and so they have no way to manipulate order of windows on the taskbar (so it would be persistent).

Firefox's session history files appear to store windows in the order they were opened, and restore them in that order except for occasional glitches. Extensions cannot modify this built-in feature. They would need to do everything themselves as I mentioned in my earlier reply:

OK sadly... Yeah, or you also open and new window, inability to re-order them is pretty bad! There were even done studies about tab overload, it is information age... This feature could exist easily in times of Windows XP, it is stupid and there is no excuse why it doesn't exist yet... https://bigthink.com/technology-innovation/tab-overload

BTW I can't thank you enough for that extension for tab names, even that helps tremendously!!!
