Hi Firefoxuser, the file has a set of rules, but installing them is a multi-step process. Make sure you set aside 10 quiet minutes to work through it.

(These steps are for users who do not have a userChrome.css file at all.)

(A) Download the style rule code

For example, https://www.userchrome.org/samples/userChrome-color_bookmark_folders_Proton89.css

Use the downloads list on the toolbar to open the downloads folder directly to the new file.

Minimize that file browser window for later reference.

(B) Create a new chrome folder in your profile folder

The following article has the detailed steps for that (#1, #2, and I recommend #3)

https://www.userchrome.org/how-create-userchrome-css.html

I have videos for both Windows and Mac in case the text is not clear.

(C) Move the file you downloaded in Step A into the chrome folder you created in Step B

(D) Rename the file to just userChrome.css

For example:

  • right-click userChrome-color_bookmark_folders_Proton89.css
  • click Rename
  • delete the -color_bookmark_folders_Proton89 part and press Enter

The final name need to be userChrome.css (Firefox is particular about the name).

(E) Set Firefox to look for userChrome.css at startup -- see step #6 in the above article.

The next time you exit Firefox and start it up again, it should discover that file and apply the rules.

I suggest bookmarking any thread you get userChrome.css code from for future reference (in case the rule stops working).

Do you mean the icon for bookmark folders that is now an outline? There is no built-in way to modify that, and add-ons also cannot change those.

It is possible to replace those icons using a community-supported (unofficial) workaround, which is to create a userChrome.css file. I have some examples of how to do that on my page here:

https://www.userchrome.org/what-is-userchrome-css.html#colorbookmarkfolder

But there is additional reading to do to understand what is involved and how to set it up (there are links for that in the navigation bar of the site.

If you would prefer step-by-step directions, let us know.

Hy i was able to do everything exactly as described. However it does not change outlined to filled... even did ....

Double-click the toolkit.legacyUserProfileCustomizations.stylesheets preference to switch the value from false to true.

But does not work as well tried to activate userprof and set to true but that did not work as well . So deactivated that again

I will keep that new file userchrome in firefoxprofile in case someday it will work .... in meanwhile i want to thank you for the time you took to try to help. Will keep this help request so i keep getting updates till there is a solution that works

As a test, do you want to try a different userChrome.css file in the chrome folder your created in your profile folder? You can generate one on this page:

The sample rules (i) enlarge the print overlay for easier reading in smaller windows and (ii) force the speaker icon/mute button to appear on tabs playing audio without your having to hover your mouse over the tab.

Does that file work?

It is not that difficult to create userChrome.css if you have never used it.

The first step is to open the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" page and find the button to access the profile folder.

You can find this button under the "Application Basics" section as "Profile Folder -> Open Folder". If you click this button then you open the profile folder in the Windows File Explorer. You need to create a folder with the name chrome in this folder (name is all lowercase). In the chrome folder you need to create a plain text file with the name userChrome.css (name is case sensitive). In this userChrome.css text file you paste the text posted. On Mac you can use the TextEdit utility to create the userChrome.css file as a plain text file.

In Windows saving the file is usually the only time things get more complicated because Windows can silently add a .txt file extension and you end up with a file named userChrome.css.txt. To avoid this you need to make sure to select "All files" in the dialog to save the file in the text editor using "Save File as".

You need to close (Quit/Exit) and restart Firefox when you create or modify the userChrome.css file.

See also:

In Firefox 69 and later you need to set this pref to true on the about:config page to enable userChrome.css and userContent.css in the chrome folder.

  • toolkit.legacyUserProfileCustomizations.stylesheets = true

I wonder what is going wrong.

Since they added the extra "Open Folder" button on the "Update Folder" row, users sometimes create their chrome folder in that one -- where Firefox will completely ignore it. Your new chrome folder needs to be in the "Profile Folder" (second "Open Folder" button in that table).
