Greetings...

As I visit specific websites and they attempt to install one or more cookies in my Firefox browser, I would like to be able to enable them for the then-current session only, so that they are automatically deleted when I close my Firefox browser.

While I could configure my Firefox browser to delete all cookies and site data when I close my Firefox browser, I do not want to delete all cookies, only those cookies that I have specificaly enabled for the then-current session only.

Is there any way that I can accomplish this in my Firefox browser? Unfortunately, I have been unable to find a way to do this based on my research to date.

Thank you for your attention!

You can use these steps to make a website recognize and remember you.

  • create a cookie allow exception with the proper protocol (https:// or http://) to make a website remember you

You can check that you aren't clearing important cookies.

  • using "Delete cookies and site data when Firefox is closed" keeps Cookies with an allow exception
  • using "Clear history when Firefox closes" to clear Cookies clears all cookies including cookies with an allow exception you may want to keep
  • clearing "Site Preferences" clears exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, and software installation and exceptions for passwords and other website specific data
  • Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security
Cookies and Site Data: "Manage Exceptions/Permissions"

Greetings, cor-el...

Thank you very much for your above reply! The information that you provided sounded like it would be an ideal solution to what I wanted to accomplish in my Firefox browser.

I was pleasantly surprised to hear that configuring a cookie with an allow exception would prevent it from being deleted by the "Delete cookies and site data when Firefox is closed" setting.

Unfortunately, as a test, when I configured a few cookies with an allow exception, then closed and reopened Firefox, all cookies, including those configured with an allow exception, had been deleted by the "Delete cookies and site data when Firefox is closed" setting.

Please advise if I misread or misunderstood or misapplied the guidance that you provided in your above reply.

Thank you!

That setting sets the expiration for all cookies (that do not have a site exception) to Session only. You can use the Storage Inspector (Shift+F9) to confirm that this is working by comparing sites that have an exception and those that do not.

https://developer.mozilla.org/docs/Tools/Storage_Inspector

I have attached a screenshot showing the cookies from a site that does not have an exception versus one that does.

If you see persistent (non-session) cookies for a site, but those cookies are gone after the next startup, another feature, or an add-on, or an external program may be clearing the cookies.

You did make sure that you aren't using "Clear history when Firefox closes" ?

Greetings, cor-el...

Unfortunately, I am positive that I used the "Delete cookies and site data when Firefox is closed" setting, as illustrated in the attached screen capture. I was surprised to find the test cookies had been deleted when I restarted Firefox, since they were configured with an allow exception (not the allow for session exception).

Thank you!

"Clear history when Firefox closes" is found further down under "History -> Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history" and if you use it to clear Cookies and Site Preferences prevails over "Delete cookies and site data when Firefox is closed" and thus cookies with an allow exception will still be removed.

Greetings, cor-el...

The History selection appears configured as:

    Firefox will: Remember history

...as illustrated in the first attached screen capture. I believe that is the default setting, since I do not recall making any changes to it.

When I changed the pull-down menu and selected "Use custom settings for history", only the first two "Remember..." selections appear selected, and the "Clear history when Firefox closes" appears not selected, as illustrated in the second attached screen capture.

Thank you!

That is OK. The second screenshot shows that "Clear history when Firefox closes" isn't enabled.

You would have to check these cookies in the Storage Inspector to see whether the cookies aren't session cookies, but are cookies with an expire date in the future. You can't use an allow exception to keep session cookies beyond the current session.
