Last week I had a problem with a Windows update and had to initiate a System Restore in order to get Windows back up and running. Everything seems fine now except for the fact that videos will no longer play. I have looked online and found various suggestions, none of which work. The videos work with Google Chrome, so the problem seems to be localised to Firefox. I am using Windows 10, and when I checked it said that I am using the latest version of Firefox.

Hello nigerichardson, sorry to hear that you are facing this problem.

Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration in Firefox. Since this feature was added to Firefox it has gradually improved but there are still a few glitches.

You will need to restart Firefox for this to take effect so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.,) and then perform these steps:

In Firefox 54 and below:

  • Click the menu button and select Options (Windows) or Preferences (Mac, Linux).
  • Select the Advanced panel and the General tab.
  • Uncheck Use hardware acceleration when available.
  • Close Firefox completely and then restart Firefox to see if the problem persists.

In Firefox 55 and above:

  • Click the menu button New and select Options (Windows) or Preferences (Mac, Linux).
  • Select the General panel.
  • Under Performance, uncheck Use recommended performance settings. Additional settings will be displayed.
  • Uncheck Use hardware acceleration when available.
  • Close Firefox completely and then restart Firefox to see if the problem persists.

Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!

Thank You.

Thank you for your reply. However, this was the same advice that I found and tried earlier - without success. I did try it again just in case I had made an error, but unfortunately it didn't make any difference.

Just to give you a little more information, I can play videos on the BBC website plus the educational website Future Learn. However, I cannot play videos on Twitter (The media could not be played) or the educational website edX (No playable video sources found.). My gut reaction is that it might be something to do with Flash, but I could well be wrong!
