How do I prevent firefox from updating in the background?
I understand that the updates are necessary, but I keep losing information in forms because firefox forces me to restart. It's extremely frustrating, and I'm about to migrate if I can't get a fix. I tried going to about:config and changing app.update.auto to false, and have tried the policies.json fix, but that didn't work.
I use ubuntu, if that makes a difference.
Thanks

You are using Firefox from the Ubuntu repositories, so your OS software update is responsible for updating Firefox in the background.
You would have to use Firefox from the Mozilla server to have more control.
Note that Firefox 74.0.1 has been released to address an exposed security vulnerability and Firefox 75.0 is about to be released next week.

Please explain the problem in detail. What happens? What are the exact error message(s) ?
How do you completely turn off update checks in Firefox v64? You can use a policies.json file to disable updates for all users. https://github.com/mozilla/policy-templates/blob/master/README.md or https://winaero.com/blog/disable-updates-firefox-63-above/
I was filling in a form on the browser, clicked to go to the next page, and go the "firefox has updated in the background" message. There was no way to continue without restarting, which caused me to lose my data.
Are you using the version from Mozilla or Linux?
Beta versions are updated almost daily. Normal programs are updated only now and then.
I downloaded it through Ubuntu Software. I've double checked and it's not the beta version.

I believe that's the answer, thank you! I've uninstalled and downloaded from the firefox website, so I guess I'll find out next week if it works. Thanks again!
Firefox 75 is actually released later this week (April 7th).
