I have been reading the forum and trying and seeing if changing some settings will solve the problem, but nothing has worked. The problem is this; when I reopen firefox after either A) having shut down my laptop, or B) having simply 'quit' firefox, I must enter my email address and password again, then enter my phone number so that it can send me a text to the link to the firefox app for my phone (which I have installed), then finally I can navigate firefox as normal and my websites and history are remembered. However, it is not really "as normal" because I have to SIGN INTO the websites again. Sometimes it remembers the username and password and all I have to do is click through it, but sometimes it doesn't and I have to manually sign into them. Bookmarks aren't ever saved either. I have attached the screenshot of the screen that comes up every time I reopen firefox and this problem happens. I did not have this problem on my older firefox instillation, just when I updated to the newest version. It is so irritating. If anyone can tell me what to do so that this does not happen, and it remembers me, I would appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

It seems to help temporarily (I can see all my old bookmarks) but it's happened twice where I've shut down my computer, turned it back on the next day only to find that it downloaded (by selecting open in new browser, I think) was removed from my dock, but the original firefox that makes me log in every time remains there.

I actually just tried to set the first profile as my default one again (as I have done two previous times). This time, however, it doesn't remember any bookmarks or anything. I opened another profile, number 25, and it was still the same thing.

I have screen recordings of what is happening, but it seems I cannot attach them here.

Clearly the problem runs deeper than simply setting one of my profiles as the default one. What should I do now?

When you installed Firefox on your computer, did you copy the contents of the .dmg file onto your computer or are you using that .dmg file to run Firefox?

If you are using the .dmg file to run Firefox, then the Firefox path may be different each time you start Firefox. If that's the case, they Firefox will make a new profile for you each time you start Firefox because it thinks that it's a new version of Firefox.

I believe that I am just using the .dmg file itself to run Firefox. I have no idea how to do it any differently... that's how it's been ever since I updated my Firefox from 67.0.1 (which had been working fine for the past year) to the current update when I learned about all the security problems with the old firefox's. I really want all my bookmarks for a project I'm doing but if I have stop using Firefox and use safari instead I guess it wouldn't be the end of the world.

If you have any ideas about how to copy the contents of the .dmg file to my computer instead of just using the file itself, I will be happy to try it out. If not, don't worry about it and thanks for your help.

The How to download and install Firefox on Mac page should help you further with that.

The reason you probably didn't have any issues before is that Firefox recently changed the way that it handles multiple installations of Firefox. There are some users who many have many versions of Firefox installed (Firefox, Firefox Beta, etc). Previously, Firefox shared the same single profile, but now it tries to detect new installations of Firefox and create a new profile for that installation, which is what appears to be happening here.
