Hi everyone,

on my Dell laptop I suddenly started getting a PR_CONNECT_RESET_ERROR a few days ago when trying to access websites like google, facebook, youtube etc.

Other websites like ebay, amazon or tripadvisor work. The problem also occurs with Chrome and IE.

I have checked date and time, run all troubleshooting programs, restarted router and laptop, cleared cache and cookies and deactivated the windows defender firewall. I have no other security software installed.

Now I am all out of ideas. Can anyone help?

Thanks Kim

Hello,

Would you please take a look at jscher2000's posts in this Reddit thread :

https://www.reddit.com/r/firefox/comments/cdmqbf/getting_a_lot_of_pr_connect_reset_error/etuybrq/

Please, run all malware scans that are listed in this article (which is mentioned in the thread) :

Hi McCoy,

thanks for your quick reply.

I've run the SuperAntispyware Scanner and the TDSSkiller. The first one found some adware, the second one didn't find anything.

I cannot use the Malwarebyte website nor access the Microsoft Safety Scanner, since I get the same connect error for these websites.

Hi McCoy.

thanks for your quick reply.

I ran the SuperAntispyware (found some adware) and the TDSSkiller (nothing found), but I cannot access the Malwarebyte or Microsoft Security Scanner websites on my laptop, since I am getting the same connect error.

I also managed to run the AdwCleaner, but the three pre-installed programs it found were all from Dell...

Hi Kim,

It's a lot to read, but would you please take a look at this :

I have tried the following suggestions from the article:

No other browser allows me to access google.com, and I am pretty sure the website is up and running and configured correctly.

I have disabled the proxy settings both on my laptop and in Firefox.

I have cleared the browser cache.

I have deleted the Winsock catalog entries and restarted the laptop.

I have also restarted the router and disabled the firewall temporarily.

So far nothing has restored access to google, facebook, youtube etc.

My pleasure - I just wish I could have been more helpful.

Meanwhile I've sent a PM (Private Massage) to jscher2000 and told him that "he's needed" .....

Hi Kim, since this affects all of your browsers, some external software or filter appears to be the most likely explanation. I think it's important to continue the malware search and cleanup if possible.

Can you bypass the filter and download Malwarebytes using a VPN? For example:

https://private-network.firefox.com/

Hi jscher2000,

I'll try that website as soon as I am back home.

Thanks for your help!

I knew I had seen this error mentioned before, and here it is :

I managed to install a free VPN that allowed me to run the two missing malware programs, but they didn't find anything...

The only security software on the laptop is Windows Defender (except for the ones I newly installed.to check for malware).

If you haven't already : would you let Windows Defender run a full scan ?

I did, both the full scan and the offline scan It didn't find anything.

Maybe I just need to use a VPN from now on...

You shouldn't have to - nobody should have to use a VPN.

I sure hope that someone will come up with a proper solution for you.

Hi cor-el

I habe restarted my router several times.

I restarted my laptop in safe mode, now it no longer recognizes my mouse, won't connect to the internet and I am stuck on a troubleshooting screen I cannot exit...

As this keeps bothering me; I found some more "tips":

http://www.pcerror-fix.com/solved-fix-err_connection_reset-error-windows-10-mac-android

https://windowsreport.com/err-connection-reset-windows-10/#12

Should everything else fail, maybe you could post this on the official Microsoft support forum:

Thank you, McCoy.

I applied all the fixes listed except the maximum transmission unit set-up which generated an error message and the PC Repair Tool which was judged as untrustworthy on several websites.

Unfortunately without any success...
