How do I get rid of this noxious new bookmark stuff and get my oldsimple controlC back?

more options

With an update to Firefox, I now get a little picture above the bookmark data. This takes up too much room on my small laptop. I want the old, simple format when I hit ControlD.

I'm not aware of any built-in setting to show/not show the large "thumbnail"/"screenshot" on the Add Bookmark panel. But you can hide it using a custom style rule in a userChrome.css file. If that is all new lingo to you, and you have 10 minutes to focus on this, here's how:

This assumes you do not already have a userChrome.css file. If you do already have a working userChrome.css file, you just need to add the rule under (A) to your file.

(A) Select and copy the following style rule code

    /* Hide Giant Thumbnail and Favicon */
    #editBookmarkPanelImage,
    #editBookmarkPanelFaviconContainer,
    *|div#editBookmarkPanelFaviconContainer {
      display: none !important;
    }

(B) Generate and download a userChrome.css file

Open the following page and paste the above rules into the editor, replacing the sample rule:

https://www.userchrome.org/download-userchrome-css.html

Then click "Generate CSS File" and save the userChrome.css file to your computer. (See first attached screenshot)

Use the downloads list on the toolbar to open the downloads folder directly to the new userChrome.css file. (See second attached screenshot)

Minimize that Windows Explorer window for later reference.

(C) Create a new chrome folder in your profile folder

The following article has the detailed steps for that (#1, #2, and I recommend #3)

https://www.userchrome.org/how-create-userchrome-css.html

I have videos for both Windows and Mac in case the text is not clear.

(D) Move the userChrome.css file you generated in Step B into the chrome folder you created in Step C

The next time you exit Firefox and start it up again, it should discover that file and apply the rules. Sample results attached (third screenshot).

Success?

Thank you for trying, and this does seem to be a workable procedure, but you are LIGHTYEARS above my head with your answer. I was TOTALLY lost after the first sentence.

I clicked NO not helpful because, I dont know if it will work and am not tech-savvy enough to follow these instructions. There should be a YES - NO- MAYBE choice for if the reply is helpful.

I am going to have to ask my computer tech to do this for me. I have no clue in the world what a userChrome.css even is - let alone whether there is such a file in my machine.

Is "chrome" the Chrome browser, and if so why is that any connection to a Firefox fix ? I do not have a Mac, but am using Windows.

REGARDLESS - thank you so much for the instructions which I will forward to my tech. I have used Firefox for years and always, any changes have been very helpful and useful. It is unfathomable to me that they would do this, without giving me a way to revert to the "classic" or old style bookmark.

I am already looking at the page I want to bookmark - I do not want a thumbnail covering up information on that page, that I want to copy and input into the bookmark name !!!!!

In the Firefox web browser "chrome" is any visible aspect aside from the webpages themselves (e.g., toolbars, menu bar, tabs) - the User Interface / UI. Firefox uses the "chrome://" URI protocol to access internal files and uses "chrome" in other cases like userChrome.css and userContent.css files which can be used to modify the UI.

Not to be confused with the Google Chrome web browser. Google hired a few Mozilla developers early on in their development of the open-source Chromium project for use as their new web browser and they decided to use "Chrome" for the Google branded version of Chromium. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chromium_%28web_browser%29

Hi timestreasuresllc, no one knows what userChrome.css is the first time they hear it, just like "icon" and "desktop" are meaningless until you see them in context. I created a website to help people get oriented if they are the tinkering type. If you aren't a tinkerer, maybe this won't be of interest to you, but just in case: https://www.userchrome.org/

Thank you for trying. Are you in a position to ask FF to PLEASEPLEASEPLEASE give us an "OPTION" on this new format, to NOT SHOW the thumbnail? I don't use Tags either, but at least being able to get RID of that ridiculously unnecessary repeat of the same page I'm looking at, would solve my space problem.

I am NOT a tinkerer, I got as far as I could with your instructions. My tech has never used FF and does not want to try - so I AM STUCK STUCK!!!!!!! I am a total amateur re: system tweaks and I do NOT want to trade an unpleasant annoying bookmark format, for a SYSTEM PROBLEM by making some mistake changing some setting .

This is truly disturbing because it seems to be beginning to resemble Outlook - which forces stuff on us that we do not want, because they "know" we will just love it !!

Really sorry - but the BEST FIX is to PLEASE PLEASE, Firefox, give us an OPTION to not show the thumbnail - you expanded the bookmark pop-up into a huge box - there is plenty of room for a check box to SHOW/NOT SHOW the thumbnail.

It's very clear from seeing other questions about this same issue, that I am NOT the only one hoping this will happen.

Thank you for consideration.
