After signing in to my Firefox account the history is still present but all my bookmarks from the account are gone. I tried on both Windows and Android and none of my saved bookmarks are showing.

Hi, that is to be expected, you have lost the token that was associated to in Sync when you reinstalled or what ever you did in 4 months. Sync is not a backup service. One device to another and that is what it is for during a session of syncing, not 4mos later. When not Syncing disconnect you devices from the account. Sync does not replace doing backups :

If you have sync, and there is a problem anywhere, Shut Down Sync Immediately On All Devices to prevent the problem from spreading. Once the problem is fixed, perform the same repair on all computers/profiles before using sync again.

Check your bookmarks backup files. Do they look intact?

Firefox automatically makes backups of the bookmarks. These are stored in the bookmarkbackups folder.

Open the Bookmarks Manager; Press the Alt or F10 key to bring up the toolbar, and select Bookmarks. Hot key is <Control> (Mac=<Command>) <Shift> B.

Once the window is open, at the top of the page, press the button labeled Import and Backup. Select Restore. From the list, pick the file you want and click it.

The backups are stored in a jsonlz4 file named something like this; bookmarks-2016-06-29_1424_enD1GTH ya0JmicnYWg4V4g==.jsonlz4

In this example; 2016-06-29 = date created, 1424 = number of entries.

Thanks for your prompt response. The thing is that I am accessing my sync on fresh installs. I'm visiting Firefox 61 after a gap of around 4 months now. All my installs on PC and Android are on newly setup devices so there is no trace of any previous FF data. Also the browsing history is somehow still present. Do note that I do have knowledge of Bookmark locations in FF and how offline backups work, but this wont be of any help on newly setup devices. Anything like restoring account to a previous state or requesting FF for my historical sync content. I do not remember deleting my bookmarks, as they were some important markers.

Aah that explains a lot. So FF sync is basically device to device (P2P) and not server-client sync. Thanks for clearing that up. So if i disconnect all my devices from sync, does that help maintain my bookmarks in case I sign-in to sync later, say couple months. Or will I need to do an offline file backup of my bookmarks. Well the past 4 months was an unexpected overhaul, but I'd still like to know to avoid further losses. Also let me know if saved passwords work the same way. Thanks.

Honestly, myself I would and do not use it. I export my bookmarks and email them to 4 diff online accounts as well as other h/drives or partions. I have been using the same ones since 1995

But yes I would always back up bookmarks before doing something that is irreplaceable

Thanks for your responses. Yeah I do my backups too and save it online and external storage, but did not expect it to turn out like this, thought it might be somewhat like Chromes sync service. Thanks for your responses man. Much appreciated.

Welcome. Is still useful if you have a smart phone though.

Note that Firefox keeps bookmark backups in the bookmarkbackups folder.
