It's a very unusual glitch because there's no way to reproduce it and is hard to explain. I'm fairly sure it's related to either the smooth scrolling or text selection. Sometimes when I would visit a page too fast my mouse wouldn't release after a click and there would be a thumbnail of either an image or text selection. If I click again it would lead me to whatever page the thumbnail is on, which is not necessarily the previous page that I have visited. I'm pretty sure it's a problem with xorg's middle-mouse paste option which I have enabled. However this bug does not happen on other browsers.

I just found what's partially causing the problem. Turns out that the bug is 11 years old. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=366945

That is something else and has been fixed since Firefox 57.0 Release as noted in bug and release notes.

However you are using third-party Firefox builds from Ubuntu so they can have their own quirks on occasions.

That report is basically about loading urls in clipboard upon middle-clicking a tab instead of say closing the tab or upon middle-click content area. The workaround until then was to set middlemouse.contentLoadURL to false in about:config

You sure you are not accidentally dragging a link or Tab and having it reload ?
