When ever I turn on my pc and open my firefox browser I have to log in for any website that requires a password. This problem has only started a couple weeks ago. I do not have this problem when I use my chrome browser. Is there something in the settings of firefox that could cause me to log out whenever I shut down my pc. Thanks for your replies

Either you are logging out, or you set the browser to remove all cookies. Your login status is recorded in a special cookie.

Profile data can be removed or not recorded several ways;

  • 1) Running Firefox in Private Mode (nothing is recorded)
  • 2) Privacy settings; (In the address bar, type about:preferences#privacy<enter>)
  • 3) Many disk cleaners and anti-virus type programs can remove data from browsers. Open their settings and have them leave the browsers alone.
  • 4) Mal-ware.

Type about:preferences#privacy<enter> in the address bar.

The button next to History, select Use Custom Settings.

Turn off Always Use Private Browsing Mode Turn on Remember My Browsing And Download History At the bottom of the page, turn on Clear History When Firefox Closes. At the far right, press the Settings button. Turn on ONLY Cache and Form And Search History leaving the others off.

  • User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; Win64; x64; rv:43.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/43.0

Please update to the current Firefox 58.0.2 release.

Firefox 52 and later releases only support the Shockwave Flash plugin and disable all other plugins. If you need to use other plugins then you can use the Firefox 52 ESR release. Otherwise you can stay with the current Firefox release version.

A detail like a website remembering you (log you in automatically) is stored in a cookie.

You can use these steps to make a website recognize and remember you:

  • you can create an "Allow" exception to keep specific cookies, especially in case of secure websites and when cookies expire when Firefox is closed.
  • Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security -> Cached Web Content: "Clear Now": Exceptions

Let the cookies expire when Firefox is closed to make them session cookies instead of using "Clear history when Firefox closes" to clear the cookies.

  • Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security -> "Use custom settings for history" -> Cookies: Keep until: "I close Firefox"

You can create an "Allow" exception to keep specific cookies.

In case you use "Clear history when Firefox closes" or otherwise clear history.

  • do not clear the Cookies
  • do not clear the Site Preferences
  • clearing "Site Preferences" clears exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, and software installation and exception for password and other website specific data
  • clearing "Cookies" will remove all selected cookies including cookies with an "Allow" exception you may want to keep

Check your Options and look at Privacy&Security and open the History settings and look to see what options are checked and unchecked? Those checked will clear out and those without will be saved.

Go to a site and log in. Make sure the browser asks you to save the password. Do not log out. Close the browser.

Wait about 20 seconds for the browser to close. Start Firefox and open the Password Manager. Is the password recorded?

I should have added; Open the Password Manager. Was the password saved?

Do you by any chance have a password related add-on (maybe even one you forgot you had ... ) ?

If so : would you diable it and see if that will make a difference  ?

What is a password related add-on (I do not believe I have a pass word related add on)? I opened my firefox browser and imported successfully imported all my passwords from my chrome browser. When I close my firefox browser and open it again all the passwords are gone In my firefox settings I have set it to remember history which I assume means that my cookies are saved

To give you an idea :

See these Google results

I opened my firefox browser and imported successfully imported all my passwords from my chrome browser. When I close my firefox browser and open it again all the passwords are gone.

Speaking for myself : As I don't know whether you've taken the advice you've been given by cor-el and updated you Firefox version or are still using version 43.0 - I find it very hard to come up with any other ideas. But I'm keeping my fingers crossed that somebody will come up with the perfect solution for you .....

One (maybe dumb) question though - you say :

" When I close my firefox browser and open it again all the passwords are gone. "

They are gone from where exactly   ?

You may already have done this, but would you go over this article please, and see if maybe that will shine a light on it  ?

And even though in your case it's only the passwords that aren't saved :

Try to rename/remove logins.json and key4.db and delete key3.db used previously in the Firefox profile folder with Firefox closed in case there is a problem with the files that store the passwords.

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.
