Hi all;

Have to start by saying I'm pretty much a total noob about pc's. I appreciate your taking time to read my question. Look forward to reading your replies.

Yellow Stone

MY PC AND WHAT I USE IT FOR

Dell Inspiron 4150 laptop. 512MB. Intel Inside.

Used for email, surfing, word processor; nothing else.

PROBLEMS I'M HAVING

FF takes long time to load. Up to 2 mins sometimes.

FF takes long time to access web pages. Sometimes 3 mins. I often get the "Waiting for..." message at lower left corner of screen. I always wonder if what the PC is waiting for is really necessary to get the darned web page up!

It always takes a long time to get another tab open, up to 2 mins.

Often, with only 2 tabs open, Process Explorer regularly shows firefox.exe using up to 500,000k Private Bytes and 375,000k Working Set.

I *constantly and repeatedly* get "Not Responding" during browsing sessions. Even with just one tab open I get repeated "Not Responding" messages. If I wait long enough FF will start running again.

WHAT I'VE DONE SO FAR

Process explorer always shows wuaueng.dll using up to 80%-100% of my cpu, so I always Suspend wuaueng.dll before I open FF to start browsing.

Clean install of FF.

Updated drivers, av software, plug-ins, extensions.

Found two Profiles. Removed the one I didn't want.

Nothing seems to address/cure/fix/stop the above listed problems.

Try finding updates for your Video Card Drivers or Reinstall your Drivers.

uninstall Firefox. Then Delete the Mozilla Firefox Folders in C:\Program Files and C:\Program Files(x86) Then restart system.

Then run Windows Disk Cleanup. Then run it again and click the button that says Cleanup System Files.

Note: your Firefox Profile is saved. But you should make a back up before you do : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/back-and-restore-information-firefox-profiles

Reinstall with Current Release Firefox 52.5.2 with a Full Version Installer https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/organizations/all/

Hi PK;

I did everything you said to do, in the exact order you gave. On the first run, Disk Cleanup got me 1,650,478k more space. That was pretty impressive. Thanks. On the second run it got me no additional disk space.

After I did everything the result was excruciatingly slow loading of everything I clicked on, including slow loading Task Manager, Process Explorer, and FF. Even clicking on, say, My Computer took forever for the dialog box to open. Clicking on START took forever for the start menu to open.

I got many Not Responding hangups once I finally got to FF. Web pages were painfully slow to load. I had to quit FF several times because I got tired of waiting for a web page to load. I refreshed FF several times but these problems didn't go away.

I was very cautious in doing what you said and I don't think I did any of it wrong but maybe I did and just don't know enough to know what I did wrong.

My laptop performance was so bad that a few hours ago I did a successful System Restore to last week, 12/14.

My laptop is running better. It's still not great and it was never fast running, but it's noticeably faster after I did the Restore. Essentially, I can again use it for my intended purposes, email and surf.

I did get one Not Responding so far. Process Explorer showed Avast (free version) using up to 18% CPU intermittently, and somehow wuaueng.dll was operating again. I suspended wuaueng.dll and when Avast finished it's thing the Not Responding web page started running again.

However, FF is back to using 550,000k Private Bytes and 475,000k Working Set, but at least I can do what I need to do on the 'net.

I learned a lot from your instructions. Thank you. I should just buy a decent laptop. Someone gave me this one years ago. I never used it until my desktop hard drive died a few months ago. I got the dreaded clicking from the HD and No Signal message on the monitor.

40G of info on that drive worthless to anyone but me. But not worth the $700 it'll cost to retrieve it.

Thanks again, PK. Appreciate your help on this.

Welcome. Ya I paid 700 this year myself for hard drive recovery. 16gig minimum for ram when you do. ASUS is great and their ROG stuff even better quality. Do not get Dell or any of those things, you get what you pay for.

Some tips : https://www.wikihow.com/Speed-up-a-Windows-XP-Computer https://www.tweakhound.com/2011/07/26/tweakhounds-super-xp-tweaking-guide-sp3-final/2/ I used to do all of these things.

Defrag is very important, weekly.
