Win 7 Pro on an old Toshiba laptop and with the recent Quantum "leap" (it's lousy, lousy, LOUSY!), I cannot seem to get Firefox to behave. Where is the URL window that says where I am? Loaded Google Advanced Search as home page and get...well, a blank screen under Firefox now. It's on the Options, but does not appear on the screen.

Sorry. I am the asker (above), but the problem - I think - is that Firefox is not loading well at all on my laptop and that is why I am not seeing the URL. (All is OK on my desktop (Win 8.1) with the new Quantum (which I DO NOT like), but I cannot get the laptop to work with Firefox Quantum. I get a firefox.exe - Application Error that says: "The instruction at (various addresses, currently I am looking at) 0X3fd19462 referenced memory at 0x00000000. the memory could not be read. Click on OK to terminate the program." And a radio button with "OK". I have deleted Firefox and reinstalled several (well many times) to no avail. the same error keeps happening the first time I try to open it. And sorry for the bad words above, but I am not having a good holiday season so far with this issue (and Quantum). Thnx for the attention. Thnx if you have a suggestion! BTW, all memory is good on the laptop, Nortona nd Malwarebytes say all is OK with the system. And IE, Chrome, etc. (latest versions all) work well. Problems started with d/l (or upgrade) that gave me Quantum a few weeks ago.

Have you deleted this way ? uninstall Firefox. Then Delete the Mozilla Firefox Folders in C:\Program Files and C:\Program Files(x86) Then restart system. Note: your Firefox Profile is saved. But you should make a back up before you do : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/back-and-restore-information-firefox-profiles

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/export-firefox-bookmarks-to-backup-or-transfer

Reinstall with Current Release Firefox 57.0.2 with a Full Version Installer https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/

If still a issue : Create a New Profile and run that. If no issues, it is the other profile that is the problem. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profile-manager-create-and-remove-firefox-profiles

Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.

If as old as you say and not been kept up with updates it is possible you should move to the Extended Release Version : 52.5.2 ESR. It will continue to get security updates until May 2018, and you can download and install it from this page: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/organizations/all/ Note : Legacy Extensions will be deleted or removed in any version update after May 2018.

You should make a backup of your Profile before going back and just because: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/back-and-restore-information-firefox-profiles

Pkshadow, I did the following: 1. Uninstalled Firefox in Control Panel, Programs and Features. Also tried to uninstall Mozilla Maintenance Service, which was still listed in Programs and Features, but got warning that is was already uninstalled with Firefox. 2. Then went to C:\Program Files(x86) and deleted what was under \Mozilla Firefox. (All that was there was \plugins\NPOFF12.DLL and \nppdf32.dll. Anyway, deleted the whole \Mozilla Firefox folder. (Note: it went into the Recycle Bin, but I noticed now a new folder in Windows Explorer under the Recycle Bin called \Old Firefox Data with a sub-directory \njwmahya.default-1414384254330-1512177516412 and 13 sub-directories below that some with further sub-directories. Anyway, I left that \Old Firefox Data and its sub-directories alone.) 3. After a full laptop shutdown and then a re-boot into Windows 7 Home Premium, I opened IE to go to the Mozilla site and download Firefox 57.0.2. After download, I then closed IE and then double-clicked on the downloaded file in Windows Explorer and Firefox went through a Full install, and at the Finish window (with the Open Firefox option already checked) I hit Finish and the first thing I see is a warning box saying: “firefox.exe – Application Error: The instruction at 0x3fe09462 referenced memory at 0x00000000. The memory could not be read. Clock OK to terminate the program (with an OK radio button)” (This is exactly the same as many times before since the upgrade to Firefox Quantum!) 4. OK. So next I closed Firefox and went into the profile manager (Run dialog box and firefox.exe –P) and in the profile manager – it opened OK – I selected Create Profile, named it and then deleted the old profile (saving nothing), and then selected Start Firefox. 5. Firefox opened with the same Application Error as above in 3. Any more suggestions? (I don’t need to save (backup) anything…bookmarks preferences, etc. ...since this laptop is sort of just a ‘back-up pc’ and I can reload and reconfigure later if I can just get Firefox to load properly. Also, BTW, it is an older Toshiba C650D laptop, but all updates are installed (though most of the original Toshiba crap was removed years ago), Athlon II P340 Dual-Core Processor, 4 GB RAM, onboard Radeon HD 4200 Graphics, and a nicely working 250GB HDD. Occasionally run CCleaner (free) and Defraggler. And Firefox had been working just fine since 2011. Malwarebytes (free) run occasionally (last yesterday), Norton Security current (Protection and Performance run also just yesterday). I do not think there is a problem with the actual laptop. Thank you so much for the attention.

Try the 32-bit Firefox version to see if that works better.

Thanks for the attention and suggestion, cor-el. At this stage I will try anything, but I really do not expect this to help. Why, if the 64-bit Firefox (well behaved until the Firefox "Quantum" upgrade - and we are talking 5+ years!) is not working, the 32-bit version would work. Seems to not make sense, but I will try (uninstall 64-bit and reinstall the 32-bit and see if it makes difference...and report back here. Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas to all.

FF57 problems were from having past x85 FF that didn't like FFx64 install it wipe and moved stuff that confused and broke much in between. So unless you have FF56 or before that was x64 install FF57x64 default will not be a issue. The problem come when FF was x86 and install FF x64 everything wasn't as before that caused the problem. And only best fix was to uninstall all FF x86 older then reboot and reinstall FFx64 version on a O/Sx64 and run the new FF to insure it moved the Addons correctly over and then close FF9(new) and then run FFx64 and hopefully that will clean things up. This is what I did to fix my problem and haven't had x86 conflicts with x64 since then. Then after this you can delete the old x86 folder and that should get things working.

Update! Cannot seem to load the 32-bit version. Every time I download it (the 32-bit installer), during the installation (though I manually selected t install the 32-bit veraion) Firefox notes I ‘have previously had Firefox installed’ and it say, ‘let’s update your Firefox’ and the same 64-bit version is installed and I immediately get the same “firefox.exe – Application Error: The instruction at 0x3fe09462 referenced memory at 0x00000000. The memory could not be read. Click OK to terminate the program.” Westend, you explanation of Firefox confuses more than assists. What is x85? Do you mean x86^, referring to 32-bit programs? Anyway this laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium – cam with the laptop form Toshiba – has bee in pace and upgraded as needed since purchase in 2012. The MS Office Professional I have has been updated from Office 2003 originally to Office 2013 (when that was still available before MS put everything on the cloud and started charging on an annual basis) and I have always had 64-bit versions or Office, IE, Firefox, etc. Anyway, this laptop has always had 64-bit versions installed as far as I know. Anyone have suggestions – other than deleting Firefox under the Add/Uninstall Programs function of the Control Panel?

Please go back to my 1st post and redo the uninstall that way. You will have to reinstall the 64 bit. Install from the link provided in the post.

Your old profile is in the folder OldFirefoxData, some of it is recoverable as it was put there due to corruption.

Can work on that once get a Firefox running.

If find a post not helpful click no where it asks. Yes he meant x86.

So ya, lets do over. Start from my post. Keep answers simple and concise questions all so simple and concise , stick to one topic lets get this working gain.

Thanks again for all the attention, but little is helping. Pkshadow, (1) in each instance on this thread I have indicated if posts are helpful or not, and (2) I followed your initial instructions to the letter. Uninstall with Control Panel has left no Mozilla files in either Program Files or Program Files(x86) (The only leftover files I found were Mozilla Plugins at C:\\Program Files (x86)\iTunes and the first few times I ignored them…now I have removed that also (Mozilla Plugins are in the Recycle Bin). And all of my installations have been from your provided site https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all (except that when it loads (and I am using Internet Explorer 11 there is a “en-US” between the “mozilla.org” and the “firefox, but I figure that is OK). I selected English (US). I selected the 64-bit program, and previously (several times) I have just saved the Firefox Setup 57.0.2.exe to my drive and then double clicked it to launch. When presented with install ALL or Selected items, I have always selected all. This time I (instead of saving to my hard drive and then launching the installation from Windows Explorer, I selected to ‘Run the Installer” and when it got to launching Firefox, at the very first window was the same “firefox.exe – Application Error: The instruction at 0x3fe09462 referenced memory at 0x00000000. The memory could not be read. Click OK to terminate the program.” After Uninstalling Mozilla Firefox again, I searched the laptop’s HDD for “mozilla” and found 38 or so directories and files, including \Users\Dennis\AppData\LocalLow\, \\Users\Dennis\AppData\Desktop\Old Firefox Data\, \Users\Dennis\AppData\Roaming, and \Local\ and Local settings, and also in some \Norton directories. Also some “mozilla” in \Windows\winsxs\ and \Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64. (If any of that is pertinent.) I have spent a lot of time after getting Firefox Quantum ‘pushed’ on me. Everything is fine with this upgrade – I still do not like it, though – on my Win8.1 desktop PC…but this Toshiba laptop with Win7 Home Premium still does not accept the new Firefox, though all previous Firefoxes have worked well! And, for what it’s worth, I’ve always had hidden files set to show. Any other ideas. Thanks so much for the attention. Where, oh where, is any kind of Mozilla Support, though?
