lost my firefox bookmarks
My firefox was acting slow. A message came up asking if I wanted to speed it up. I clicked on the message and the process began. But, afterwords, I could not access Forefox. I would get a message indicating my profile no longer existed. I then did a System Restore to see if I could get Firefox back. That worked but now all my saved bookmarks are gone. What happened? P.S., I attempted to restore my bookmarks using the Firefox instructions for doing so. But that did nothing. In fact, it kept circling back to the "how to" page

I hate how System Restore destroys user data. But let's set that aside for a moment.
First, did the Refresh create a folder on your desktop named Old Firefox Data? (If so, you may have bookmarkbackups in that folder which you could restore to Firefox, if restoring will run normally.)
Second, what is the status of the rest of your Firefox data, such as any saved logins, history, add-ons, etc.?
Third, have you shut down and restarted Windows since this happened? That sometimes is necessary if there is a problem with Firefox accessing its data files.
There is an "Old Firefox Data" icon on my desktop but it is empty
I also lost my History tab but I was able to restore the tab thru Firefox Help. Unfortunately w2hen I click on the tab, it is empty Finally, after reading your suggestions, I also shut down and re-started windows. But that did not help either. An editorial comment ... what the hell did Firefox do when it put out that "Speed Up Firefox" dialog board? This has caused a major problem for me, as I travel a lot and I rely on my bookmarks to pay my bills, access my bank accounts, etc
Let's not give up yet. Two next steps:
Search for Other Profile Folders
Does the Profile Manager list your immediately previous profile folder?
To check on that, inside Firefox, type or paste about:profiles in the address bar and press Enter/Return to load it.
This page should list all the profiles Firefox is currently aware of. If you see a profile that is not currently set as default that looks promising, scroll down to it and click the Set as default profile button below that profile, then scroll back up and click the Restart normally button. (There are some other buttons, but I think those are still "under construction" so please ignore them.)
Firefox should exit and then start up using the other profile. Is that the right one?
If it's not there...
Did Firefox orphan your old profile folder?
Here's how to check whether there are additional profile folders in the standard location in addition to the one you're using. Start by opening your current Firefox profile folder using either:
* "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
* (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
* type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter/Return
In the first table on the page, click the "Open Folder" button, to launch a new window listing various files and folders in Windows Explorer.
In the Windows Explorer address bar, click the capitalized word Profiles to move up one level in the folder hierarchy. More than one folder here by any chance? Do the files in those folders look like they were last updated around the time of the update?
If you've got any promising looking folders, we can discuss next steps to recover use of them, or at least your bookmarks.
Mine Other Restore Points
Windows may have your more recent system state, either with actual data in the Old Firefox Data folder, or in your Profiles folder. On Windows 10, I suggest investigating this way:
(A) Set Windows to show hidden files and folders
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/14201/windows-show-hidden-files
(B) Download the System Restore Explorer tool
http://nicbedford.co.uk/software/systemrestoreexplorer/
That program shows you files and folders in restore points. If you have a more recent one, you can look under:
- \Users\username\Desktop\Old Firefox Data
- \Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles
The goal is to find a bookmarkbackups folder with recent backup files you can restore. If you find any candidates, copy them out to a safe location like the current Windows desktop, rather than restoring them into your live Firefox data.
Those hints didn't work either. But I did find a tortured solution. I had brought my old laptop with me - which i had replaced because of a damaged keyboard. I used it to connect to Firefox and discovered my old bookmarks were still there. So I went thru the laborious task of writing down the URL's of these bookmarks and then found each website on my new laptop and saved those websites in Bookmarks. I did lose a few because I hadn't used my old laptop in 6 months. But I was able to recover the important ones like bank accounts, credit card accounts, etc. From now on, I'm going to back up my Bookmarks to an external hard drive.
