google doesn't work in firefox

more options

For the last three four days I can't use google.com/google.se or gmail.com in Firefox (56) anymore. I've tried to restart i without add-ons and also done a "clean" restart of it. Doesn't matter which network I'm using.

I get the following error code while trying to open any of Google-sites: SSL_ERROR_NO_CYPHER_OVERLAP I've looked the Mozilla Support pages and it doesn't apply or help

Don't know what to do except using another browser.

Don't give up just yet! Let's check whether any of the ciphers that Firefox can use have been disabled.

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button promising to be careful or accepting the risk.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste SSL3 and pause while the list is filtered

Firefox should display about 15 lines starting with security.ssl3

(3) If any of the preferences is bolded and "user set" to false, double-click it to restore the default value of true EXCEPT

(4) You can block these two to improve your security (double-click to switch them from true to false):

  • security.ssl3.dhe_rsa_aes_128_sha
  • security.ssl3.dhe_rsa_aes_256_sha

(Assuming the Preference column is alphabetical, these usually would be at the top.)

Does that change anything?

You also might check:

(5) In the search box above the list, type or paste TLS and pause while the list is filtered

Do any of the preferences starting with security.tls have a non-default value (bolded and indicates "modified" or "user set")? That might be an issue.

I should ask more generally whether you have observed any secure connection issues on other sites that might indicate a broader problem, or whether it is literally only a Google problem.

Are other popular search engines affected, such as https://www.bing.com/ or https://www.yahoo.com/ ?

Do you (knowingly) use any software that filters your web access, such as security suites or parental control software? Potential candidates include:

  • Avast, AVG, BitDefender, Bullguard, ESET / nod32, Kaspersky
  • Lavasoft Web Companion
  • Microsoft Family Safety
