folders on bookmarks toolbar do not open

My bookmarks toolbar contains a mix of links and folders with sets of related links within them. When I first start Firefox these links and the links within the folders are all available and work fine. However, later, the folders are still visible but will not open. This seems to be after I have minimised Firefox and later re-maximised it. To fix this I have to close Firefox and restart it. I am up to date with version 55.0.3 (32-bit) running under Win 7.1 (64 bit).

Some possibly related observations that might help are:

1 - whenever this happens the three-bar menu button has an exclamation mark over it, and it won't open either. I suspect that's a big clue.

2 - when Firefox asks for my master password the dialog is mostly off-screen top left and cannot be dragged onto screen. This is new behavior that seems to be coincident with the advent of the bookmarks problem.

Speculating, I wonder if the window that opens for a bookmarks folder is in fact opening but is being drawn somewhere off screen and thus only appears unresponsive. Could there be something overwriting the screen origin co-ordinates to create this appearance.

I have noted what appears to be a related question that addresses disappearance of folders but in my case the icons are still visible just not active. The bookmarks library clearly shows these bookmarks as present after I have restarted.

Any ideas / solutions will be much appreciated.

Thanks

Al

Try to create a new profile to test if your current profile is causing the problem.

See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.

Thanks Cor-el. I'll try that. Good idea.

That has been interesting.

I first tried the Refresh Firefox link which seemed like a good tool. However the behaviour was still there after the Refresh. So next I moved on to creating a new profile.

Immediately on creating the new profile two information boxes popped up from Norton File Insight to note that gmpopenh264.dll (mozilla) is trusted and widevinecdm.dll (google inc) is also trusted. The location of both files is in the new profile folder. Each has its own folder. Interestingly, when I checked the default profile there were folders for both of these files but each one was empty.

Next I opened Firefox and it looked like a nice clean install with no previous links or anything else. Before thinking about migrating any files from the old profile I decided to do a simple test which was as follows:

  1. visited 3 websites I use fairly often an bookmarked each on the bookmarks toolbar.
  2. created a single bookmark folder on the bookmarks toolbar.
  3. moved two of the bookmarks into that folder.
  4. clicked on the folder to verify that the links were in there and active which they were.
  5. closed lid of my computer to invoke sleep mode
  6. opened lid of the computer again to restart work
  7. clicked the folder to access the bookmarks but it didn't open on screen
  8. pressed the down arrow key once and pressed <enter> and the page for the top bookmark opened.

Conclusion: confusion! Even a very clean version of Firefox with only three bookmarks and one bookmark folder is exhibiting the same odd behaviour.

Next I tried doing the same in an alternate account on my PC - my wife's account. Exactly the same pattern as described above.

I have also tried altering my laptop behaviour to hibernate instead of sleep when the lid is closed. Makes no difference - same problem on resume.

This is a real head scratcher.

Has anyone else tried repeating my steps to see if they get the same behaviour. Perhaps I'm unusual in using sleep mode for my PC when I get up and do something else for a while?

Did you try to disable hardware acceleration in the new profile?

Close and restart Firefox after toggling this setting to make the change effective.

Yes. Tried that. Still the same unfortunately.

Had to restore my system to before the video driver update as previous problems with that driver update were re-appearing - parts of the screen being incorrectly rendered and with regular clusters of black rectangles which could be removed by running the mouse over the area.

So that's sorted. Unfortunately, my Firefox default ID appears to have been interfered with in the process such that a lot of stored login data is no longer available nor my bookmarks. The default ID folder is still there as is the new ID folder so recently created though it's not visible when I do firefox.exe -p.

Maybe there are some entries in the Registry that will help.

Sigh!

Got out of that one - I think. The file profiles.ini identifies the various profiles available for startup so I just edited it to include entries for the other two profile folders. Interestingly the old default folder reverts to Firefox 56. We'll cope! At least all my stored logins and bookmarks are there so I can work forward from there.

Yes!! That's sorted it and various settings carried forward to my latest profile. Plus I am once again on Firefox 57 a.k.a. Quantum
