A similar question was posted in another thread and eventually marked as "Solved" by the poster (but not for me) , I followed all the advise in that thread to no avail , Please see below . Sometimes as much as 3 -4 times with in a 12 hour period "FF" will "UPDATE" from ver. 54.0.1 (which is stable) to Ver. 55.0.2 (which has bug's) , the auto-update has been turned OFF but "FF" does it anyway.

Not only does it do an unwanted update, but when it does it "Re-arranges" and removes (some of ) the folders in my bookmarks tool bar.

My current routine is : When starting up "FF" first time of a morning I check the version and check to see that the bookmark's are in their proper order, if they are everything is fine (for maybe an hour) , at some point the screen will blink and I will now be on Ver. 55.0.2 and the bookmarks tool bar will be all screwed up again ( and bookmarks will be slow to respond as well as slow to put the options on screen) . I then have to close the browser, reload ver. 54, and then restore the bookmark's from an earlier version and wait for the next screw up and start the process all over again. The OS here is Win7 Ultimate . I have tried everything suggested in the other thread (I am not all that "computer literate") ! Any thought's or fixes ? Thanks for reading  !

Type about:preferences#advanced<enter> in the address bar.

Under Advanced, Select Update. Check the settings.

Also turn off Use a background service to install updates

Hi   !

You mention that you've tried everything that was suggested in another thread - I don't know which thread that was, but maybe that means that in 'about:config' you've set these preferences to 'false' :

app.update.auto app.update.enabled app.update.silent

I sure hope that setting these values to 'false' works, for : your system details show : 'Application Update Service Helper' which unfortunately cant be turned off by the user. See :

Thanks "HAPPY" but this doesn't seem to be what 's happening here ( I had thought at one time it might be (the "PUSH" thing that is)) . At the moment , I'm leaning toward something being embedded deeper in the program ( and certainly deeper than I am comfortable going without help or directions) . Tnx !

Don't use that feature! If you want control over updates use the "Don't check for updates (..." - along with Mozilla Maintenance Service turned off, which is the "background service" that Fred mentioned.

The "let me choose whether to install them." is all too easily overridden if the user is typing something in Firefox at the exact moment that the message would appear that an update is available. By "overridden" I mean that the pop-up message ends up behind the main browser window and with no user response within 10 seconds Firefox will just go ahead and install the update without waiting for a user response.

And "THE BEAT GOES ON" , had to do a restore on the bookmark's twice in 10 minutes ! The better news is , "FF" has not tried to install Ver, 55 "YET" today .

These can't get your data back, but will help in the future.

These add-ons can be a great help by backing up and restoring Firefox

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/febe/ FEBE (Firefox Environment Backup Extension)

FEBE allows you to quickly and easily backup your Firefox extensions, history, passwords, and more. In fact, it goes beyond just backing up -- It will actually rebuild your saved files individually into installable .xpi files. It will also make backups of files that you choose.

Start up today: Found that VER. 55 had reinstalled itself.....so I reinstalled Ver. 54 AGAIN ! About 30-45 minutes later "BLINK" and the bookmark's changed again !

What the H**L is going on here ?
