I'm having all sorts of problems after Firefox automatically updated to 55.0.2 in Windows 7. It wouldn't run. It would start the service but would never actually open/launch the app. I uninstalled it and went to the 32bit d/l page to reinstall. But, it installed the 64 bit version (grrrr). Now, the biggest problem I am having is that when I click on a link in an email or office document, the browser doesn't launch or a new tab open. Instead, I get an error message: General Failure. The URL was: http://www.URL. Application not found.

Firefox is set to my default browser.

Any ideas?

I ended up solving the issue. It took a while since I couldn't even uninstall the "bad" version. I think part of the problem was caused because the move to 55.0.2 happened on a user account with limited rights. To solve the situation, I logged into my admin account, uninstalled and then reinstalled. Everything now works. But, it still installed the 64 bit version even though I clicked the 32 bit d/l link. Kind of annoying and certainly unprofessional.

V55 has been giving users problems. Reinstall v54. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/install-older-version-of-firefox?cache=no Be sure to read everything here. If you still want to downgrade, look under; I still want to downgrade. Click the Directory of other versions and languages link. Look for the directory of the version that you want. But, remember that old versions may have security issues. If the problem links are in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, etc.), the problem may be the one described toward the bottom of this article (although the message there is somewhat different): How to switch from 32-bit to 64-bit Firefox.

If you want to make sure you're getting 32-bit Firefox 55.0.2, you can use this link for U.S. English. If you prefer another language, click the .. and then click the relevant locale. (If you don't know the code, check your URL while you're on this site, as it should be in there.)

(It's the big "setup" file.)

That was very good work. Well done.

I thought the automatic/semi-automatic installations to Firefox 55 was rather heavy handed. without warnings as to how it might or will break a user profile. My preference would have been able to switch over to Firefox ESR when I still had FF v53, so it would have been a smooth profile turnover.
