Can anyone give me some 'For dumb dumbs' step by step with no abbreviations instructions for killing my new browser hijacker Yahoo... I downloaded a couple of what looked like free antiviral programs... They were not free on further viewing...and another two, although different names where also the same company... After deleting them Yahoo appeared and took over. I can access Google by fiddling around but its results come up in Yahoo.

Obviously I have looked for it within 'Remove a program'... I have also gone into Windows/Programs/Mozilla Firefox/addons and cannot find anything that sniffs of Yahoo. I have also reverted my laptop to a previous date way back at the end of July.... Afterwards Yahoo was still taking over my searches.

It will even cut me out of viewing when I access help pages and Ive had to find what I was reading using the history menu section. It allows other searches that are not to do with slaying Yahoo.. lol.. Its like living with the enemy.

I have been reading some earlier help pages but I don't find what people are being advised to find. Or answers provided are questioned by others who suggest also deleting other files... I want to be confident in what I delete not hesitant etc..

Id hoped Firefox may have a magical add on especially for the Yahoo removal task as many are finding they have been taken over...but, sadly nothing came up..

So if anyone can help with solutions even if they are different to each other, I would like to look at everyone's ideas please. Again...please be very specific with the dumb dumb speak for me lol... no big techy talk etc.. ha ha.. Thank you.

I am sooo glad that I now have the list of your extensions   !

For there it is :   SearchAssist Incognito   !

In my very first post I asked you to look for ....... SearchAssist Incognito, and if it was there, to remove it.

It's a browser hijacker   !

Will you please remove it  ?

And, please, please make sure that you've run   all   malware scans that are mentioned.

Things should be back to normal after this.

Hi

The default search provider for users of Firefox in North America when search using the default home screen is Yahoo, but this can be easily changed.

This article will walk you through how to change the default home page.

I hope that this helps, but if not, please come back here and we can look into a different solution for you.

It’s very sad, but many software downloaders/ installers will trick you into installing not only their program, but other programs as well.

You have heard of the fine print in shady contracts, right? Well, some installers you need to look at the itsy bitsy teeny weeny fine print.

You are thinking you are giving the installer permission to install the program you want by using the recommended option. But if you use the Manual Option Instead, you discover all kinds of stuff that you do not even know what it is or what it does.

From now on, everyone needs to Use The Manual Option to put a stop to this.

Note that these programs can also change browser/computer settings.

I am a bit more advanced than the answers kindly provided so far...but thank you both very much...

Anyone got anything on attacking this Yahoo who was not announced by new viral software .?

.I always use the manual installations and have done so for many years... Have specific tabs as my home page and guard them. Its not my home page that has changed... Its the wee search bar that you can add your own options to that has been taken over... I have even removed Yahoo from the choice within that drop down menu under this little search bar...but it still provides Yahoo searches. What is to be focused on is that even when I get into the Google start page, which looks normal it gives results only in Yahoo... It only hijacks search engines that I have listed there for choice if needed.

Say you type into google 'dog'..press the button or return key ...it changes to the Yahoo logo headlined results for 'dog'. It seems to kick Google away. It does the same to Bing.. it does not take over Wilki nor UTube which are also in the menu choice of the little search bar...

Hi   ! Even though you may have done most of what's mentioned below :

Go to the 3-bar menu => Addons => and look for any unfamiliar or suspicious looking extensions, like e.g.:

SafeSearch Incognito SearchAssist Incognito

When you find any :   remove them.

Do the same in Windows' Control Panel => Programs.

However :   most malware will be 'hiding' somewhere , so let's run malware scans :

Further information can be found in this article :
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-caused-malware?cache=no

Run most or all of the listed malware scanners.
They all work differently   -   what one program doesn't pick up, the other might.

Hello Happy... This looks nice and informative..... I will have to do this tomorrow morning... I have run Malwarebytes through a couple of times over the weekend but take your point that a selection is best as one will do what another does not...thanks Happy... I found the names of possible suspect files very useful too.

Well I have not located Yahoo inside the files or anything that looks like it could be the Yahoo hijacker.

I have run loads of Malware which ripped out loads of wanted items... I reverted my lap top back to a date to right the damage... but had to manually repair my mail software and some contents...

I have downloaded Google search engine (not Chrome) but that is still being taken over by Google. I have deleted Yahoo from the small Firefox search bar..(that is not the main address bar but the small one to the right side. It is strongly refusing to make Google its default searcher.

The only way I can access Google is to use Chrome (which I do not want to use) and then steel the address I want and cut and paste it into the main Firefox address bar. Yahoo does not take over the separate software Chrome.

Google, Google wherefore art thou ...hast thou been banished to a far off land by the wicked and dastardly Lady Macbeth who replaced thee with her servant Yahoo? Our parting was such sweet sorry.

You mean : Yahoo, right  ?

I have deleted Yahoo from the small Firefox search bar..(that is not the main address bar but the small one to the right side).

Have you also removed Yahoo here :

3-bar menu => Options => Search  ?

And set Google as your default search engine  ?

The only way I can access Google is to use Chrome (which I do not want to use) and then steel the address I want and cut and paste it into the main Firefox address bar. Yahoo does not take over the separate software Chrome.

You've lost me here   ..... You can't use Google as your search engine with Firefox as your default browser  ???

Google, Google wherefore art thou ...hast thou been banished to a far off land by the wicked and dastardly Lady Macbeth who replaced thee with her servant Yahoo? Our parting was such sweet sorry.

I don't think Bill had Google in mind when he wrote that   .....

What's your home page  ?

Hello Happy..

1. Google search engine and Google Chrome are not the same they are separate in the way they are used.

I have taken some screen shots of my main Firefox screen.. I keep referring to the small search box and making it clear that it is not the main address box search.i.e. all starting with www.

You have made me sound crackers here Happy..quote "You've lost me here ..... You can't use Google as your search engine with Firefox as your default browser  ???"

Yes you can Happy...

Within this small search box Firefox gives one the option of making other search engines your main default browser. Mine has always been set to Google. So, yes, you can have Firefox as your main browser and also have Google as your default browser.. its optional and an option.

I think I can add screenshots on here and there are two ...1. the main Firefox header which include the small search box to the right that has the options to change just the searcher part of Firefox. 2. Plus screen shot of the option choices within that small box...

(yes I did get Yahoo and Google mixed up when typing it out..you did spot the error....how silly of me but not surprising its driving me bonkers lol)

Like I said :   Chrome is Google's browser, and then there is Google's search engine. Indeed two different things, but both are Google products.

No,   I've made   myself   'sound crackers',   as in :   I don't have a clue what's going on here   .....

Thanks for all the help Happy...

I've tried, but I failed miserably. And yet you've marked my post as   'Chosen Solution'  ...... You can remove that mark by clicking the   Undo   button on the right side of that post.

Your problem needs be fixed, and I hope that somebody else will come to your rescue soon ......

Hello Happy.... Yes I did mark it solved as felt I was coming across a bit bonkers and everyone else that was likely to step in would also think I was too. I have changed the solved area now.... I can live in hope I suppose although I have run out of ideas on how to slay Yahoo. Thank you.

Aww, you were definately   not   coming across as bonkers   !!! All of this must be sooo frustrating   -   but your problem   will   be solved   !!!

I am still very confused about :

"The only way I can access Google is to use Chrome (which I do not want to use) and then steel the address I want and cut and paste it into the main Firefox address bar. Yahoo does not take over the separate software Chrome"

I've been racking my brain trying to figure out what you could possibly mean by this ....... (see : I'm a dumbbell)

You apparantly have Chrome installed as a browser   -   but is Firefox still installed as your   default   browser  ?

You can check that here : 3-bar menu => Options => General => under 'Startup'

What is the '3 bar menu'..?.. Ive even Goo...er Yahoo'ed this and nothing came up for me the is that exact name...

I only downloaded Chrome in desperation because it is the only way I can access Google Search more quickly than typing it through Yahoo where it will come up in the end if I use any of the search engines that Firefox have as a choice..... I enter Chrome quite separately and NOT via using Firefox. Any access to Google Search Engine via Firefox has been eaten by Yahoo. I do not like Chrome and do not want to use it permanently.

I have Firefox as default.... .... as another completely separate area I have Chrome accessed by clicking a Chrome Logo which I've put in a visible Windows task bar. Hope this make sense.. Screen shot included here.

One thing at a time.

What's the 3-bar menu  ? That's Firefox'es menu :   the three horizontal lines in the upper right corner, right under the closing X. I call it the 3-bar menu.

Now back to Chrome. You've installed Chrome as a third browser   -   and that's okay.   (But after this problem is solved, you may want to remove it, as you obviously don't like it).

What I do not understand is, that you can only use Google as your search engine, using Chrome as your browser.

Remember I asked you before :   what is your home page  ?

When you click on your Firefox icon (shortcut) : which page opens  ?

3-bar menu => Options => General   -   that should show your home page.

Your screenshot shows that you have set Google as your search engine   -   yet, while using Firefox as your browser, when you want to search with Google,   Yahoo takes over   ? Still, after all the malware scans you ran   ?

I've asked a fellow contributor for help   -   for I really, really want this solved  !

Thank you for that last screenshot   -   and : YES , that makes perfect sense. You make perfect sense. I just don't get what's going on here.

Do a malware check with several malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.

Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware. All these programs have free versions.

Make sure you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.

Right..got it... contents here on screen shot.. below. but there is no 'options' area. just 'customise' and 'verify your account which is just below the area of the screen shot below. i.e. not in the screen shot but would be seen just below the area you can see on the screenshot below. Now back to Chrome. You've installed Chrome as a third browser   -   and that's okay.   (But after this problem is solved, you may want to remove it, as you obviously don't like it). I will certainly be removing Chrome. What I do not understand is, that you can only use Google as your search engine, using Chrome as your browser. "This is the main problem and issue" Remember I asked you before :   what is your home page  ? When you click on your Firefox icon (shortcut) : which page opens  ? Screen shot was included in a previous answer to you I have enclosed it again below... I have 5 newspapers in 5 tabs that all open in separate tabs when I open Firefox. I removed them for the screen shot. Only the header is shown as there is no information useful below the header of the Firefox opening page. 3-bar menu => Options => General   -   that should show your home page. It does not...probably set up differently to yours? Your screenshot shows that you have set Google as your search engine   -   yet, while using Firefox as your browser, when you want to search with Google,   Yahoo takes over   ? Still, after all the malware scans you ran   ? Yes..even after all those scans which did remove stuff that I wanted like my mail providers notifiers and other areas... But Ive repaired everything now. I've asked a fellow contributor for help   -   for I really, really want this solved  ! That is most kind and I really appreciate your time on this.'' Thank you for that last screenshot   -   and : YES , that makes perfect sense. You make perfect sense. I just don't get what's going on here.

Hello Co-rel... I took a whole afternoon using all the malware scanners I could find and those suggest by various help pages I found... Many of them removed other things I need on my machine. So I am now totally reluctant to scan as it took ages to get things back together.

I have Malwarebytes and Spybot as installed precautions on my machine and have been using them every few days for the past 5 years... AGV now have a malware detector and I also applied that process.

Now I really only trust Them not to tear away other parts of the insides of this machine as others have done this week.. but thank you so much for answering my question.
