After updating to Thunderbird 52.2 it has started to act very strange.

At first all my mails and folders disappeared and then repopulated themselves. Now every time I open Thunderbird I can see that it continues to download messages I have already in my folder at a considerable cost to my internet usage and cap.

Occasional when I open thunderbird I see that all my messages and folders have disappeared again and after a few minutes it goes through the whole process of repopulating itself.

I think something has become corrupted but I am at a loss as to how to proceed. would it help to uninstall thunderbird and re-install again?

Have updated to 52.2.1, but problem persists.

When I updated to 52.2.1, the messages of one of my gmail accounts redownloaded once - essentially on the startup that did the update. And after that there were no more redownloads.
