Sorry, but the Java plugin does not work in Firefox 53. The only plugin that is recognized by Firefox 53 is Flash.

The Extended Support Release (ESR) of Firefox 52 will still run Java, Silverlight, and other old plugins. ESR was first developed to meet the needs of large organizations that wanted Firefox to change much more slowly, but anyone can use it. The main difference is that it gets security updates only, no feature changes for about a year at a time.

Windows Users: When you get to the ESR installer list, you'll notice at least two different downloads for Windows:

• Windows installer is the standard version for Windows that runs on both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows Vista through 10 (and 32-bit XP), the best choice for most users
• Windows 64-bit installer ONLY runs the Flash and Silverlight plugins, so that is not what you're looking for. (If someone reading this only needs Silverlight and is considering switching to 64-bit, there may be some extra file cleanup to do on your system. See: How to switch from 32-bit to 64-bit Firefox)

(1) If desired, make a backup of your Firefox data. See: Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles.

(2) Download the ESR installer (Windows, not Windows 64-bit).

(3) Exit out of Firefox 53.0 completely

(4) Run the ESR installer -- it should detect that it is an upgrade-type installation and work with your existing data automatically

(5) Run Firefox and see whether it is working normally

I tried to download Java but got an error message in the beginning. We have detected you are using Firefox which might be unable to use the Java plugin from this browser. Starting with Firefox Version 52 (scheduled for March 2017), Firefox has removed support for the standard way in which browsers support plugins.

Download-attempt anyway and then got a message that Java may not have downloaded properly. When I look for Java at all programs, icon is there but no info when I click on icon.

Yes, using the genome.ucsc.edu program is still giving me problems with Firefox that I don't have with Chrome. However, I prefer some features that Firefox gives that are better than Chrome's with this program when it is working properly.

Download the installer. Then run it.

Try bypassing the Java page that detects Java and use the downloads list page:

If it works in Google Chrome then I do not think that Java is involved. Are you certain that this is not about Java? I'm seeing PNG images on the page.

If images are missing then check that you do not block images from some domains. You can tap the Alt key or press F10 to show the Menu Bar Check the permissions for the domain in the currently selected tab in "Tools -> Page Info -> Permissions".

Check "Tools -> Page Info -> Media" for blocked images

• select the first image and use the cursor Down key to scroll through the list
• if an image in the list is grayed and "Block Images from..." has a checkmark then remove this checkmark to unblock images from this domain

Check permissions.default.image on the about:config page to make sure it is default (1).

There is Tracking Protection that can block (wanted) content, so check the location/address bar for special icons.

If you use extensions ("3-bar" menu button# or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) that can block (wanted) content (e.g. Adblock Plus, NoScript, Flash Block, Ghostery) then always make sure such extensions do not block (wanted) content. There is security software that can interfere with loading content, so check that as well.
