Hi, let's start with the password. What password is it?

  • If you mean a Firefox Account password to connect to your previously created Sync account, you could skip that for the moment and see whether you can restore your password by local copying instead.
  • If you mean a master password for your saved logins, possibly you did not copy all of the necessary files from Old Firefox Data.

Which approach do you prefer?

  • Copy a small amount of data selectively from my old profile folder (the one inside Old Firefox Data), for example, just bookmarks and passwords
  • Revive my entire old profile through a multi-step process, which may bring back the problems that tempted you to use Refresh before

I would like first of all how to retrieve all of my bookmarks from the old browser to the refreshed browser. How exactly is this done?

Okay, let's check what bookmarks you have now. Open the Library dialog using either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+b
  • Bookmarks menu > Show All Bookmarks

In the left column, there are three categories below All Bookmarks:

  • Bookmarks Toolbar
  • Bookmarks Menu
  • Other Bookmarks

Are all of these showing just a few default bookmarks, not any of your bookmarks? I'm asking because the "Restore" feature will wipe out what's shown here and replace it with the contents of a backup file, so I want to make sure that's okay.

To use the Restore feature, see the following article:

Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer

You'll select the "Choose File" option from the Restore menu to open a Windows file browsing dialog. In that dialog, go to your Desktop, then into Old Firefox Data, then into your old profile folder, then into the bookmarkbackups folder where you should find various files with dates in their names, for example:

bookmarks-2016-09-26_999_gibberish==.jsonlz4

(The number following the date is the number of bookmarks in the file.)

You can select the most recent file and see whether it can be restored.

Does that work?

Also, one common issue after a refresh is that neither the Menu Bar nor the Bookmarks Toolbar are displayed. If you would like either of those bars, you can use one of these methods to show the toolbar list and select the desired bars there:

To turn on the Menu Bar, Bookmarks Toolbar, or other bars, click it on the list.

I still still need to find out how to copy paste or however method to get the bookmarks to move from the old folder to to the new bookmarks toolbar.

Okay, passwords. There are two files which need to be copied over from your Old Firefox Data folder to your currently active profile folder.

Open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using either

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

In the first table on the page, click the "Show Folder" button. This should launch a new window listing various files and folders in Windows Explorer.

Leaving that window open, switch back to Firefox and Exit, either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "power" button
  • (menu bar) File > Exit

Pause several seconds while Firefox finishes its shut-down cleanup.

Scroll down and right-click > Rename each of these files by adding -old into the name:

  • key3.db => key3-old.db
  • logins.json => logins-old.json

Leave this window open since you will be pasting here soon.

In another window, open Old Firefox Data and click into your old profile folder. The two files you need to copy over to your current folder are:

  • key3.db
  • logins.json

You can single-click key3.db to select it, then Ctrl+click logins.json to add that to the selection. Then right-click either of those files and choose Copy.

When you return to your current profile folder, you can right-click > Paste in a blank area. The next time you start Firefox, it should read in those passwords.

Success?

Do not copy/paste bookmarks. Use the Restore method I detailed in my first reply. Did that work or not?

Actually, my second reply: https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1140883#answer-921545
