How can I make firefox show only the url when I type into the top bar (address bar?)

When I start typing a URL, Firefox makes suggestions from my history or somewhere. That's OK. Until the latest update, the suggestions consisted of URLs. That's OK. Now the suggestions are long and include icons, page titles, and the url. How can I have only the urls shown?

Previously Firefox showed the Title on the top row and URL on a second row. If you only saw the URL, it probably was one of your extensions modifying it. Because the structure has changed in Firefox 4648, the old extensions will need to be updated. In the meantime, you can use some custom style rules to modify the appearance of the bar. For example:

I think it wouldn't be hard to tweak these existing styles to completely hide the title, although, some URLs are so inscrutable that I wouldn't want to do that myself.

To apply user styles to Firefox's interface, you either can use the Stylish extension or a userChrome.css file. I prefer Stylish because it is easy to edit and preview styles, but if you don't want any more extensions, then a userChrome.css file might work better for you.

Thank you, but I don't want to turn off the search. I want to restrict the description shown. For instance, if I want to go to the NY Times Crossword page, when I type ny into the bar, I get a bunch of search suggestions.

In the past, all I would see for each site would be the link, starting with www.nytimes.com/etc

Now the line shows the NYTimes icon, a long title for the page, then the link (www.nytimes.com/etc)

This is distracting, and it takes longer to figure out which of the suggested links I want. I would like to behavior to revert to what it used to be.
