Reported as bug: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1284215 0n July 4, 2016 Hello, I am running 64 bit Linux Mint 17.3 MATE Desktop, a derivative of Ubuntu. Firefox 42 came with the OS distro, and it has upgraded to Firefox 47.0.

When dealing with a long page that has vertical scrolling, I get frustrated using Firefox when it keeps scrolling after I have let up on the left mouse click pointed at the bottom down-arrow button. If I drag the grab bar, it overshoots and can produce a wild ride.

I found several bug reports, all resolved, in my Google search, which described similar behavior in Windows.

I've visited 29300 and 157123 on bugzilla. Comments in the latter indicate seeing this crop up again in recent builds.

I have Restarted with add-ons disabled, found a very long page at OneMileScroll.com and pointed the mouse at either end of the scrollbar and held the left click down. Then released the mouse button. I am on the down scroll arrow button, the page keeps going on down for awhile after I let up. I have also created a clean profile with no add-ons.

I am rewriting my post here on July 1 after seeing no responses to date.

After the original post, I saw nothing in the tags about 64 bit or 64bit. So I sought to add a tag, and added 64 bit to the question title.

Today I've redone the title. Included information I had mentioned in my "response" post.

Firefox with this distro was version 42, I believe it updated to 44 before updating to 47.

This 64-bit Firefox experience has otherwise been excellent. NO slowness, no issue with unresponsive scripts, even with over a dozen tabs open for hours.

The scrolling associated with this forum's edit window offers the expected behavior and stability.

Please help. Thanks in advance!

I am using my IBM System X Server Desktop, 64 bit machine.

BELOW IS MY ORIGINALLY-WRITTEN POST

Hello, I am running 64 bit Linux Mint 17.3 MATE Desktop, a derivative of Ubuntu. Firefox 42 came with the OS distro, and it has upgraded to Firefox 47.0.

I believe this is expected behavior in Linux version of Firefox: To click in the trough just below the slider will move the page one screenful at a time. To click further away from the slider will jump more than a screenful at a time, and clicking the end of the trough will bring me to either end of the document. If I click on the scroll arrow buttons, I should be able to scroll until I release.

CAUTION: Motion sickness ahead If I click on the slider and drag, I find the slider is spring-loaded and it overshoots, and I can be racing back and forth if I try to navigate with that.

If I click the end arrows and release, I scroll to a smooth stop. If I click, hold and release, it will continue scrolling, coasting to a stop. If I click and hold, hold and release, it will continue that much more coasting before coming to a stop.

I don't just exactly recall when I first observed this behavior. It wasn't that way with the initial Firefox 42 bundled with the 17.3 release. My last version was Firefox 44.x.

I've created a blank profile and run with that to a page that misbehaves and it still does the same thing.

I pasted this message in here 3 times to make a very long message, it has vertical scroll controls on this message's edit box. Very well-behaved, I might add. That scrollbar is as I described what I expect to have happen.

I am using my IBM System X Server Desktop, 64 bit machine.

I found several bug reports, all resolved, in my Google search, which described similar behavior in Windows.

I've visited 29300 and 157123 on bugzilla. Comments in the latter indicate seeing this crop up again in recent builds.

My browser settings I do a custom Privacy setting where I keep ALL cookies until I close the session. I use Cookie Monster add-on to preserve cookies from selected sites. I empty cache when I exit Firefox. I have a custom Advanced -> Network tab cache size setting, relatively small, 5 MB. I will sometimes go there while playing YouTube and clear the cache.

With 4 G of RAM I have had the luxury of having 16 tabs open at once with great performance from Firefox.

Please advise.

Bump: Here is a reproducible test:

I've restarted Firefox in Safe Mode (Help > Restart with add-ons disabled) and went to http://onemilescroll.com. The home page of this site has a measuring ruler on left and right margins and is very long..

I clicked on the bottom arrow button then released, the scroll stopped. Then clicked-and-held-the left button, then released. The scroll continued long after I released the button and then stopped.

I didn't try moving the slider, which is about 10% long compared to the viewport, indicating the page may be showing about 1/10th of its content.

Thank you.
