I have a problem where my tabs sometimes abruptly, seemingly randomly, close. I couldn't find anything about this specific problem. I don't know if it's the computer thinking I'm moving the mouse in a way that simulates a touchscreen command to close the tab, but in any event I don't have a touchscreen and don't want my tabs closing without my specifically clicking on the X to close them. Does anyone know what could cause this and what I can do about it?

Does only the currently selected tab close or does Firefox close as well?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window

Neither, actually. It's always a tab I don't have selected at the time.

Safe mode doesn't find anything; I'm trying fixing my Flash installation. Thanks.

What was in that tab, or does it happen with anything?

It happens with any tab, completely at random--it always happens when I'm doing something though, I don't go away from my keyboard and come back to fewer tabs than before I stood up. It really seems like the browser is parsing my finger movements on the keyboard or my mouse movements to translate to hitting the X to close a tab.

What I mean was; is it the same web page that disappears? Can you tell how long that tab was open before it disappears?

Type about:support in the address bar and press Enter. Under the main banner, press the button; Copy Text To Clipboard.. Then in the reply box at the bottom of this page, do a right click in the box and select Paste. This will show us your system details. No Personal Information Is Collected.

Right, I understood the question. No, it can happen to any webpage I go to. Time seems to be random, sometimes minutes, sometimes hours.

You probably are familiar with "Undo Close Tab" on the right-click menu of another tab (or Ctrl+Shift+t), so you could recover these tabs when you see them closing. But if you don't see it, you might miss it...

This is an odd problem because there isn't a keyboard shortcut to close a random inactive tab, and if you aren't moving the mouse pointer over a tab, then neither a direct click on the X or a middle-click (scroll wheel click) should be perceived as hitting the tab.

Sometimes a site will launch a new tab using a specific name (rather than just "blank new tab"). This enables the "parent" page to retain more control over the "child" page and potentially close it at some point. But I'm not sure why it would. Pages opened by a script also can close themselves, but that seldom occurs at random.

Some of your crash reports weren’t sent to the Mozilla Servers.

In the address bar, type about:crashes<enter>. Note: If any reports do not have BP in front of the numbers/letters, click it to submit them.

The crash report is several pages of data. We need the report numbers to see the whole report.

Using your mouse, mark the most resent 7 - 10 crash reports, and copy them. Now go to the reply box below and paste them in.

user.js Preferences
-------------------
Your profile folder contains a user.js file, which includes preferences that were not created by Firefox.

The user.js file will only be present if you or other software has created this file and normally won't be present.

You can check its content with a plain text editor (right-click: "Open with"; do not double-click). The user.js file is read each time Firefox is started and initializes preferences to the value specified in this file, so preferences set via user.js can only be changed temporarily for the current session.

You can delete the user.js file if you didn't create this file yourself.

You can use this button to go to the current Firefox profile folder:

Windows hides some file extensions by default. Among them .html and .ini and .js and .txt and you may only see a file name without file extension. You can check the file extension (type) in the properties of the file in Windows Explorer via the right-click context menu.
