MacBook running El Capitan. Every time I open Thunderbird the beachball spins with 4 unopened emails. Probably tried 15 times over two days. The password window comes up but I can't even click "Cancel." When I Force Quit, I see the "application not responding message." I sent the program to trash and installed again. Same issues. I think folders are missing because I could never find Profiles (or I was looking in the wrong place). Thanks for helping. Don't assume I know much of anything about computers.  ;) --Michael

Wayne, thank you for your guidance. I'm not sure that I did everything the most efficient way but I'm up and running again. I never found a profile so I created a new one and transferred my address books from an older computer. I very much appreciate your time. --Michael

Thanks for helping me, Wayne.

I tried opening in safe mode but I don't get the "Safe Mode" window. Instead it goes directly to my (stuck) basic account window. If I move the mouse at all or click a key, the beachball begins. If I wait a few minutes, the ball stops. A move of the mouse or key click makes the spinning resume.

Also tried restarting the computer in Safe Mode. And then following the instructions for opening TB in Safe Mode. Same result.

Checked the Activity Monitor. When I start TB, it reaches around 2-4% CPU in the first 1-2 minutes, CPU Time 3.32. When the Inbox screen comes up, it shifts to 103.2% CPU and CPU Time starts climbing. About 4 minutes after start-up, it's at 2:37.30 CPU and climbing, 53 Threads, 67 Idle Wake-ups, 449 PID. No other process beside Activity Monitor was showing any activity. FYI, I'm showing only 4 unread messages in my Inbox--none with attachments of any significant size. Again, thanks!

Started computer in Safe Mode with Internet connection off. Tried starting TB both with and without the Shift Key down. After repeated tries, I was able to move quickly enough to click as you directed. If I moved fast enough, I could get the spinning blue beachball for 2-3 seconds before the multi-color beachball reappeared. Sometimes the cursor will return after a long period of time, but if I move over any part of the TB, the multi-color beachball returns. I thought perhaps it just took a long time to process so I gave it 1.5 hours but get a repeat of what I described in previous sentence. Continued thanks... Michael
