Firefox Mac 44.02 update destroys WebGL compatibility?

I've been having real problems with recent updates to Firefox for the Mac breaking WebGL compatibility. I'm currently running Firefox 44.02 on a 2015 Mac Powerbook running OS 10.11.3

I had been using web sites that require WebG without a problem until Firefox automatically updated to version 43.04 on 1/7/16. WebGL stopped working, and a visit to http://get.webgl.org/ confirmed that it was not working with the message: "Hmm. While your browser seems to support WebGL, it is disabled or unavailable. If possible, please ensure that you are running the latest drivers for your video card."

It started working normally when Firefox updated to 44.0 on Feb 1, 2016.

Why do these updates keep breaking WebGL? I've turned off automatic updating of Firefox until this is resolved. Is there something I can do do get this working properly? Is my only current recourse to go back to v 44.0?

Today (Feb 12), it is no longer working. I see that Firefox updated to version 44.02 at 8:47 PM last night. There have been no other changes on my computer since WebGL was last working.

Throughout this time, Safari is running WebGL without any problems.
