Flash player was updated successfully, according to Adobe, but when I try to play a video I get a message that basically means I don't have flash player at all. Using Firefox help, I went to the plugins page to choose Always Activate for the plugin but it doesn't appear in my listing of plugins. I've restarted my browser, computer, and modem. I've downloaded flash repeatedly. I get 2 popup messages about Firefox disabling something but they disappear before I can read them or click on them. I have Windows 10, Firefox version 44.0.1 and was downloading flash version 20.0.0.306. Can you tell me what is happening and how I can fix it? Thank you

I do not see Flash Player as being installed, on your Firefox. (System info is middle right in this forum). Firefox may disable outdated FlashPlayer versions, but usually still gives you an option to use them.

Possibly you are checking with the wrong browser.

If you install FlashPlayer and it does not work please attach an image of the FlashPlayer test page as seen from Firefox

I went to the Firefox flash player page and used this link to download flash again: Note: If you are having problems with the Flash installer from Adobe's download page, you can use this Flash Player installer link to directly download the full installer.

It appeared to complete successfully but flash still does not appear in my list of plugins and videos will not play. I get this message: Hulu requires Flash Player 11.0.1.152 or higher. Please download and install the latest version of Flash Player before continuing.

As requested, a copy of the flash test page as seen from Firefox is attached.

The test you show confirms you do not have a working FlashPlayer installed.

I tried the link in

Note: If you are having problems with the Flash installer from Adobe's download page, you can use this Flash Player installer link to directly download the full installer.

It worked fine for me. I opted to save the file. Located it and ran it by double clicking it. Entered an Admin password when prompted. Accepted Adobe's T&C. Restarted Firefox. It updated Flashplayer, and I note I got it wrong in my post above. The current version is now 20.0.0.306

Did you follow those steps ? Did you get any error messages ?

I followed those steps. The only messages I got were the 2 popup messages referenced in my original post. They disappeared too quickly for me to read anything more than that Firefox was disabling something. I did not get any error messages from Adobe, it seemed to think the install was successful.

20.0.0.235 and older is on blocklist but not the 20.0.0.267, 20.0.0.286, and the current 20.0.0.306 versions released since for Win/Mac. https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/blocked/

You may have older versions still installed on system which can happen sometimes, more so if Firefox was still running with Flash Plugin in use at time.

Download the uninstaller https://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/uninstall-flash-player-windows.html

Close Firefox, uninstall Flash versions, then install the new Flash Player, then start Firefox.

I ran the uninstaller, then downloaded flash. I received a message that the download was complete but flash is still not there. The flash test page still shows that I do not have flash installed. Please note that I have updated flash many times without any problems.

When you downloaded the Flash installer, did it start running automatically? If not, you'll need to go to the Downloads list (click the arrow on the toolbar) and "open" it from there.

I downloaded it, opened it, and ran it. It ran automatically and ended with a message that flash had been uninstalled.

Flash was uninstalled first, but then you downloaded and ran the usual installer and it said it installed properly?

So have you tested it again ? No doubt you have, but if you confirm please.

Try to look at your Windows event logs doe that give any clue to what is happening ?

It is probably time to consider in this order and testing the uninstall and install between each stage

  1. Temporarily disable any security related software.
  2. Try in Firefox's safemode
Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode
  3. A Firefox refresh/reset. Please note that removes any Firefox extensions you have installed, so you may wish to bookmark their home or support sites prior to trying that
Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings
  4. A clean Install: details next

Clean Install

Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a Clean reinstall. This means you remove your Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. This process does not remove your Firefox profile data (such as bookmarks and passwords), since that information is stored in a different location.

To do a clean reinstall of Firefox, please follow these steps: Note: You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.

  1. Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from mozilla.org (or choose the download for your operating system and language from this page) and save the setup file to your computer.
  2. After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (or open the Firefox menu New Fx Menu and click the close button Close 29 ).
  3. Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    • Windows:
      • C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
      • C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
    • Mac: Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
    • Linux: If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see Install Firefox on Linux. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder firefox in your home directory.
  4. Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
    1. Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
    2. Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.

More information about reinstalling Firefox can be found here.

WARNING: Do not use a third party uninstaller as part of this process. Doing so could permanently delete your Firefox profile data, including but not limited to, extensions, cache, cookies, bookmarks, personal settings and saved passwords. These cannot be easily recovered unless they have been backed up to an external device! See Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles.
