I have somehow accumulated a large number of tabs in a tab bar and would like to delete some and rearrange others

You can find the home page setting here:

  • Firefox > Preferences > General > Startup: Home page

Firefox supports multiple home pages separated by '|' (pipe) symbols.

You can check for problems with the sessionstore.js file in the Firefox profile folder that stores session data. When sessionstore.js is deleted you lose App Tabs and Tab Groups and open tabs and you will have to recreate them, so if necessary make a note or bookmark them.

You can use this button to go to the current Firefox profile folder:

Thank you. I guess I was not clear in describing my problem. I know how to set the home page. What I cannot figure out how to do is modify the 20 or so tabs that show up on the banner underneath the address and search boxes. I am apparently adding to them without knowing that I am. I cannot find a way to delete and reorder them.

Are you talking about bookmarks on the Bookmarks Toolbar?

You can organize the bookmarks in the Bookmarks Manager (Library). See:

Can you attach a screenshot just to be sure what you are talking about?

  • Use a compressed image type like PNG or JPG to save the screenshot
  • Make sure that you do not exceed the maximum size of 1 MB

I am too klutsy to figure out how to include a screen shot. But I am looking at the following horizontal bars in my firefox screen on a macbook: Top from left: apple symbol; Firefox; Edit; View; History; Bookmarks; Window; Help

Second tier from left: red dot; yellow dot; gree dot; a series of tabs currently open

3rd tier from left: back arrow; padlock image; Mozilla Foundation (US) https://support... (box with currently opened web site); search box

4th tier from left: folder symbol; "Most Visited" firefox symbol; "Getting Started"; a series of symbols and short-hand descriptions of sits I regularly use. The links look like taps, but there are folder-like no lines separating them

It is in this 4th tier that I have accumulated about 20 such links. I want to delete most of them and re-order the remainder. Thanks for staying with me on this.

Yes, that forth tier is the Bookmarks Toolbar that shows the bookmarks that a.re stored in the Bookmarks Toolbar folder.

On Mac you probably need to delete these bookmarks in the Bookmarks Manager (Library) if you can't click such an item with the right mouse button.

You can open the Bookmarks Manager via the Bookmarks menu:

  • Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks

You can find the Bookmarks Toolbar folder as the first of the three root folders under the All Bookmarks folder that you see in the left pane of the Library. Select the Bookmarks Toolbar folder and delete bookmarks that you want to remove in the right pane. You can do that via the Organize menu, that is the first of the three toolbar buttons in the Library.

In the Bookmarks Manager (Library) there is a toolbar with the Back and Forward button and three other buttons (Organize, Views, Import & Backup).

  • The first (gear) button is the Organize button with basic edit menu items for bookmarks
  • The second button is the Views button that allows to change the sort order for viewing purposes (doesn't sort permanently).
  • The third (star) button is the Import & Backup button that allows to backup and restore a JSON backup and import and export an HTML backup and import bookmarks from other browsers.

Hover each button to see the tooltip or click each of them to see what they do.

There are three main Bookmarks folders and bookmarks can only be created in one of those folders and its sub folders.

  • The "Bookmarks Toolbar" folder stores the bookmarks that you see on the Bookmarks Toolbar (Firefox > Options or View > Toolbars).
  • The "Bookmarks Menu" folder stores bookmarks that show in the Bookmarks menu and are created via "Bookmarks > Bookmark This Page" or via "Bookmark This Link" in the right-click context menu.
  • The "Unsorted Bookmarks" folder stores bookmarks that are created by clicking the star at the right end of the location bar.
