Answer----I have confirmed several times that IMAP access is enabled............

In Thunderbird have you subscribed to see folders? right click ojn mail account ir Inbox and select 'Subscribe' to see the list.

Answer----I tried to follow your instructions..right click ojn mail account ir Inbox and select 'Subscribe' to see the list. these instructions do not seem to "fit" with my version of Thunderbird. However, In the file menu I can scroll down to a sub menu identified as subscribe. When I Left click subscribe a box appears titled subscribe with two fillin boxes above a folder list. The top fillin box is titled Account and filled----northpassage@startmail.com and the fillin box below is titled show items that contain and this fillin is empty. Below that is a tabbed box titled Folder List with the offering to Select the folders to subscribe to: The box is empty with four buttons on the right margin----Subscribe, Unsubscribe, Refresh and Stop. Bottom right-----usual two boxes OK and cancel. I clicked the refresh button with no results.

When you attempt to GetMessages what error message do you get...word for word?

Answer----message box appears---titled Login Failed----text---Login to server gn.imap.startmail.com failed---Three Buttons Retry Enter New Password Cancel

re : I discovered my Startmail folder is represented----But---with a padlock icon next to it.

That means you are using a secure connection, it does not mean the account is locked.

I notice you are using AVG: Item 3.) Anti-spyware etc.--d32f answers I use MalwareBytes/2.1.8.1057, Advanced System Care/version 8/8.3.0, AVG 2015/2015.0.6086 and Spybot-Search and Destroy/1.6.2

Please check to see that your Firewall/Antivirus product is not blocking Thunderbird. See section AVG Internet Security here:

located info on AVG and SSL: https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Testing:Antivirus_Related_Performance_Issues AVG AVG can not scan SSL connections and requires you to set it up as a proxy and place the mail settings in AVG and pointers to the proxy in Thunderbird. AVG offers instructions here: http://www.avg.com/au-en/faq.num-5224

I have force uninstalled the application----AVG followed by an attempt at logging on to Thunderbird. AVG uninstallation was described successful including any "persistent" small remnants. I then attempted to load Thunderbird. T-bird seems to load alright but the same error message appears: Login Failed----text---Login to server gn.imap.startmail.com failed---Three Buttons Retry Enter New Password Cancel. The portion of the error message-------gn.imap.startmail.com finds me wondering. Why would i be logging in to gn.imap........rather that simply startmail.com??????

I think everyone assumed you knew what the server name should be.

After all this tutorial https://support.startmail.com/index.php?/Knowledgebase/Article/View/227/0/how-do-i-set-up-startmail-on-my-email-client and https://support.startmail.com/index.php?/Knowledgebase/Article/View/535/0/how-to-set-up-your-startmail-account-in-thunderbird appear to be fairly good.

We can not comment on the server name as startmail are very precise on the incoming server name.

" from the Add device popup in StartMail, corresponding to your incoming mail settings"

and for the outgoing as well
