firefox won't load scroll bards or menu or SSL

Hello. First of all i will list all the fixes i tried to get that out of the way.

1: Complete new install of OS with fresh install of recent firefox, no add on's or extensions. 2: Complete uninstall of firefox including protected and hidden files and folders as well as registry entries. 3: Firefox reset or refresh. 4: Full virus and mal/spyware scans (none detected). 5: Effects Windows XP, 7, 8.x, and linux including Mint and ubuntu dists. 6: Tested on different computers. 7: worked in the about:config swipe settings (no fix). 8: Tested with and without any firewwall or AV. 9: Tested for same problems with MSIE, CHROME, OPERA, and several linux browsers, never had a problem. 10: Checked and updated adobe flash player, shockwave and java script, no fix.

The problem:

A: No matter if a direct link click, or open in new tab or new window. Firefox will not load the side or bottom page scroll bars, nor will it load the "file, edit, history, e.t.c." menu bar, no bookmarks bar, the backspace button is disabled, no back or forward arrow buttons.

B: The only thing that works is the up down arrows on the keyboard, not even the num pad pgup/dn keys work. My mouse scroll button down not work. I can move the mouse around as normal , however if i right mouse click on a blank part of the locked page i do get a pop up window with back-forward arrow keys, save, page info options , however the back-forward arrow keys are greyed out most of the time.

C: The SSL lock does not appear on the locked/stalled pages so that's a security problem.

D: I often have to right click on link then open in new tab or new window several times before firefox actually loads the page correctly.

In conclusion the only fix i could get was to go back to firefox v29.x and lock out auto update.

Hi terratracks, the change wasn't on purpose -- someone just made a mistake. The testing pool must have too few people using this combination of features (private windows, tabbed browsing off) to have picked it up before release.

hello, this sounds like bug 1166066, which is going to be fixed in firefox 39 - you can try it in beta right now: https://www.mozilla.org/beta

If it is the above-referenced bug, it should not occur in Firefox 37.0.2 either, that is a new issue in Firefox 38 with the following combination of circumstances:

(1) You are viewing a page in a private browsing window (2) Tabbed browsing is turned off (3) You click a link which launches the link in a new window (because the site coded the link with target="_blank")

The new window opens without menus, toolbar, scroll bars, etc.

If you are not ready for Firefox 39, these are the currently known workarounds so you can keep using private browsing windows -- any one of them will work around the bug:

(1) Use tabbed browsing (this is a checkbox under Preferences > General > "Open new windows in a new tab instead");

(2) Shift+click links to open them in a new window with the standard features; or

(3) Change a bunch of hidden settings as explained below -- this will not require you to make any changes to how you use Firefox, but you might occasionally need to enlarge some small pop-up windows that were sized for a window with no toolbars displayed.

For #3, here are the steps:

(A) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button promising to be careful.

(B) In the search box above the list, type or paste feat and pause while the list is filtered

(C) For every preference that starts with dom.disable_window_open_feature. if it is not "true", double-click it to switch it to true.

You may find that you prefer this anyway, since sites can no longer strip these features out of pop-up windows.

Thank you: Jscher2000 & Philipp it is appreciated.

Jscher2000. Yes just about all my windows_open features were FALSE.

Yes i am most often in private browsing mode, and i don't use tabs unless necessary.

I do find it odd that private browsing would cut off scrollers and menu bars since they have little or nothing to do with privacy. Yes i know that ssl log in is not valid in private windows and i am ok with that.

Again many thanks!

I hope that FF39 fixes this as the Moz support FAQ search didn't have much on this bug except routing me to a MAC OSx thread.

Philipp thanks for the 1166066 bug ref. It is noted for future ref.

Jscher2000. I understand, although in Canada this combination is quite common as it works best or at least the smoothest with our ISP's and web sites especially when trying to do multi tasking with different platforms/medias and not having a window active in the task bar.

I know for tablets if you are trying to work two Canadian web sites at once you can't use tabs it scrambles everything with firefox and even ipad safari has problems.

Thanks again.

Just trying to make an order on the Canadian mint web site i had to drop FF and chrome to use MSIE to make the order. With FF and Chrome some site elements wouldn't load up and you couldn't enter shipping info and it's the same with FF in linux no matter what computing device you are using.

No problems with Opera, or the other open source browsers that linux dists have access to.

That's all i have to say. For now FF is working but i have not tried any SSL or shopping so i don't know if the re-enabling of the access tools has fixed that as well.

Most sites work with most browsers, although some government sites may not be updated very often...

Firefox and Chrome users tend to use more content blockers (like ad blockers), so that is a factor to investigate when elements are missing or disabled compared with IE. That and whether the site says that IE is required.
