When you are ready, we can start moving parts of your old data
and <strong>Copy</strong> it to the new profile.
</p>
<hr>
<p>First; open your file browser to the <strong>New</strong> profile;
</p><p>Type <strong>about:support</strong> in the address bar and press enter.
</p><p>Under the page logo on the left side you will see <strong>Application Basics.</strong>
Under this find <strong>Profile Folder.</strong> To it’s right press the button
<strong>Show Folder.</strong> This will open your file browser to the current
Firefox profile. Now <strong>Close Firefox.</strong>
</p>
<hr>
<p>Second, open the file browser to the Old profile.
You should see it on the directory "tree" in the first file browser.
Right click on that folder and select <strong>Open In New Window.</strong>
</p><p><strong>Warning&nbsp;! !</strong> Only <strong>Copy</strong> the files you are told. We will avoid anything that
might be the cause of your problems. Here is the list of files;
</p><p>cookies: Do not bother. Cookies will be created when you return to
the web site. However, you will have to log in everywhere.
</p><p>extensions(add-ons): it would be better to download them fresh.
</p>
<h6 id="w_">==============</h6>
<p>key3.db and logins.json: These are the Passwords file.
</p><p>mimeTypes.rdf: What to do with what type of file.
</p><p>places: History and Bookmarks.
</p><p>prefs.js: Your settings. <strong>Note,</strong> this may be contaminated.
</p>
<hr>
<p>Copy these files from the old to the new. You will get a message
about the files already exist. Choose to over-write for each file.

I have now disabled "clear browsing and download history" but not "active logins and form and search history", which are still activated to clear when Firefox does. They don't seem to be the problem. It seems to be trying to clear the browsing and download history that causes the problem as its happened before.
However as I mentioned above. Firefox is now working as before with no problems. Its just that I am wondering why trying to clear browsing and download history causes this problem which means I can never do that on closing Firefox.

FIrefox 38.0.5 has just started working normally again!! Don't know what happened. I put the plugin Shockwave Flash 18.0 r0o on 'Ask to Activate' from 'always activate', so I don't know if that helped, but Firefox is now working and all bookmarks etc are there as before.
Have you any idea what caused Firefox to do this? Was it trying to delete the browsing and download history on closing Firefox? Cause one other time it happened the same, except I did something that time with Profiles. Not sure what which got it going again.
</p><p>So Thanks heaps again for all your help. If you can tell me what NOT to do so I don't have this problem again that would be great!

<p>Hi Fred, I've just had another look at the Firefox page that came up and I see I can access my add ons, plugins etc. Do I have to disable any of these. The only ones not on 'always ask to activate' are: OpenH264 Video Codec provided by Cisco Systems, Inc
and Unity Player 4.3.7f1
Otherwise no book mark are there or history. Actually I'd wanted to delete history to see if it would fix an error message I was getting in Firefox in my Bank account web page. But trying to delete all that was when the initial problem began!
Ok let me know what I need to do next. Thanks again!

<strong>Windows: 32-bit</strong> C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe -p
<strong>64-bit</strong> C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe -p
<strong>Mac:</strong> Navigate to <strong>/Applications/Utilities.</strong> Open the Terminal application.
In the Terminal application, enter the following:
/Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin -p
<strong>Linux:</strong> In <strong>Terminal</strong> run: firefox –P
For users who have one or more builds from <a href="http://mozilla.org" rel="nofollow">mozilla.org</a> this will not work.
It would be best to have the full path so if you had placed the untared contents
in a folder in /home it would be /home/&lt;username&gt;/foldername/firefox/firefox –P
An easy way would be not to do it in a terminal but in say a launcher since
you have to point it to the firefox script in Firefox folder you can then add –P
on end. You can also have the exact "profilename" after the -P so Firefox
will start with that Profile.

I tried what was suggested, i.e. downloading the latest Firefox for all languages. I had already deleted my previous Firefox App. and rebooting. But the same problem happened. Firefox refused to open and then the message came up saying that it had closed as soon as it was opened and asking me to open in Safe Mode which I did, but then it hung up and a message came up from Firefox saying "Well this is embarrassing, we can't open your windows and tabs, try deleting these webpages." But then the page was hung up and so I couldn't delete anything just had force quit once again and so am at square one again. <em> Thanks again for any help.
