I have been using Version 28 (the last good one) for years now because I had problems with newer versions being buggy on my older 2005 Dell Win_XP 32bit desktop PC. I bought a brand new HP15 laptop a few months back (Win8.1 x64) and have been running V.28 on it since it had more toolbar buttons available (Download Progress Bar, Stop/Reload Button, Old Style Bookmarks Drop Down Menu). Today I decided to upgrade to the latest version (38.0.1) and so far it has not seemed like an upgrade to me.

The missing taskbar buttons mentioned above are one gripe I have. Don't know why they were removed from newer versions, but that's for another time. My main problem with v.38 is that ever since I installed it, the Options menu is locked and/or inaccessible. When I open Options, the menu that appears won't let me click anything, plus it has a strange unmarked button in the middle of the screen that does nothing when I click on it (see attached pic). I read a few of your support articles, but none seemed to solve the problem. I even changed the name of the existing Firefox folder and reinstalled a clean version thinking that perhaps since the first installation was just an upgrade rather than a fresh install, something from the previous v.28 might be conflicting with the new version, but still I can't access the Options Menu. It seems like that unmarked button wants me to click on it to perform a task or something before it will let me access the Options, but as I said, clicking it does nothing at all. The button presses when I click it, but it stays on the screen and nothing happens afterward.

Any help would be appreciated. I may have to revert back to v.28 if the Options menu doesn't start working.

PS: The image uploader for this post kept showing the twirling progress star without verifying my screenshot was actually uploaded, so I am posting an offsite link to the picture here: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v363/iambigwayne4/misc-images/firefox_options_zpsd3jniykd.png

hi, probably your custom theme is interfering with the new options panel - please search if there's an update available for that addon or else disable it for the moment and report the problem to its author.

You were correct, it was the Aeon theme I installed. I contacted the creator and this was his solution. It worked. OPTIONS appears in the old style menu and lets you change things. Thanks for the info to the cause.

Eureka! After much research and experimentation, I found that using about:config to set the value of "browser.preferences.InContent" to false displays Options in the old floating window and allows them to work in Aeon Clouds. False was apparently the default before Firefox v38, but FF 38 changes the default value to true and thus opens Options in a fixed tab that does not presently work in Aeon Clouds.
