Hi, I was having problem with Firefox last night and the AOL mail and decided to do a Refresh. That messed up everything and all of my settings were gone. Then I did a Restore in my computer hoping to bring the old Firefox back. Instead I lost all of my bookmarks, downloads and saved passwords just like I just started from day one with Firefox. I use my books marks and passwords all of the time and need them back as soon as possible. I somehow technically inclined but please do not give me complicated solutions I cannot follow. I am desperate.PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!

Thank you,

Amy

Look on your desktop. Do you see a folder called; Old Firefox?

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/recovering-important-data-from-an-old-profile

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/back-and-restore-information-firefox-profiles

These can't get your data back, but will help in the future.

These add-ons can be a great help by backing up and restoring Firefox

FEBE (Firefox Environment Backup Extension) {web link} FEBE allows you to quickly and easily backup your Firefox extensions, history, passwords, and more. In fact, it goes beyond just backing up -- It will actually rebuild your saved files individually into installable .xpi files. It will also make backup of files that you choose.

I took the folder out of my desktop but had saved it before I deleted the shortcut. I went in and copy and pasted the old folder but that did not bring back anything. I was able to got to the bookmarks backup and restore bookmarks from two days ago. Now all of the icons are gone so I have to go one by one to restore the icon pictures.

What bothers me the most now is that all of the hundreds of Saved passwords are gone and the new ones are not getting saved even though I have it set to to save passwords. Password Manager is not working.

I need somebody to guide me through the process of restoring them.

Thank you,

Amy

Have you checked your Recycle Bin, it can still be restored.

There is nothing in my recycled bin. I was able to find the old old folder by going to os>users>My Name>app data>roaming>Mozilla>profiles>name of old folder. I copy and pasted it to the new profile folder and deleted the new folder. I did not get anything back. Obviously I had no idea the the REFRESH button would erase everything otherwise I would not have done it. There should be a warning before doing so.

I have most of my bookmarks back because I used the Import/Backup feature and restored bookmarks from two days ago.

All my passwords are gone so now I have to go into each website and re due them again. The BAD thing is the password manager is not working. I cannot get the passwords to stay even though is set in the Security tab to save passwords. The password manager window with the Key does not come up. How can I fix the password manager so that it can save passwords again? Is there another way like going into about:config and fixing something?

Thank you,

Amy

I'm sorry we could not give better help.

Use the Febe and Opie programs I posted above to make backup files.

One last thing. In the event that the passwords information is lost, you should record all information in a separate text file somewhere else on your hard drive, or written down. You can easily copy and paste if you need to do so. If you are concerned about someone else looking at that file, you can compress it using a password.

Hi Fred,

I have discovered some more information since yesterday. I had a places.sqlite corrupted file. I tried to fix the problem by following instructions in a mozillaZine article called "Locked or damaged places.sqlite. I deleted and renamed the file but it did not work. Instead it went to an Internet Explorer folder that cannot be open. The other thing I discovered is that I have two profile folders, one within the other with the same name. Folder number one I get to it by going to Trouble Shooting Information and the Show Folder which is: C:\Users\NaME\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\g&*%%.default. The second profile folder is within this first profile folder also called g&*%%.default (not the real file name) In the first folder you can see three the places.sqlite files. The big one with the Internet Explorer logo was the corrupted one that I renamed. 10,240KB. I cannot open it in Internet Explorer. This is the one that I think had all of my passwords. The second profile folder within the first profile folder has NO places.sqlite file. It only has "places file". I found another article while searching in the Mozilla Support from Superuser.com called: How do I repair a corrupted Firefox places.sqlite database". This article tells you to download the latest version of the SQlite shell, then it goes on with a bunch of instructions that I think are way out of my league of knowledge. I am going to post a copy of the profile folders so you can see what I mean. I hope that with this information you can help me in a better way. If everything else fails if I click on the Refresh Firefox button again do you think it would fix things? I don't want to mess things up more than they are right now. I have backed up my bookmarks which according the Firefox Health Report I have 4453. I used them all the time. The other thing that scares me about using the Refresh Firefox button is that my Menu bar was gone and my AOL Home page with Goggle search engine was also gone. It was so convoluted that that is when I decided to do a restore point in my computer, except that Firefox came back with the missing or corrupt files. I have my bookmarks back with blank icons. I just have to used them to get the icons back. The thing that is still not working and bothers me the most is not being able to save passwords because the Password Manager is not working probably due to the missing places sq.lite files. I have all of my hundreds of website passwords written down. It is just a pain to have to look for them and input then every single time I use a website. Again, I hope that with this new information you can help me a little bit more.

Thank you,

Amy

I think, at this point, you need to create a new profile, and remove the old one(s). How that happened, I don't know. With the new profile, we can start to rebuilding as much of your old one as we can.

The first thing I want you to do is read the below instructions. If you find the files the instructions talk about, copy them to a safe location.

Old Password Files

Firefox 32 and later builds store the passwords in the logins.json file in the profile folder and no longer use the signons.sqlite file. You can force Firefox to reimport the passwords from the signons.sqlite file.

  • reset the signon.importedFromSqlite pref on the about:config page to the default value via the right-click context menu
  • delete the logins.json file in the Firefox profile folder with Firefox closed

When you restart Firefox then you should have the signon.importedFromSqlite pref with the value set to true and you should have the passwords imported in the Password Manager unless there may have been errors.

Reset Firefox -- easily fix most problems

If you're having problems with Firefox, resetting it can help. The reset feature fixes many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information like bookmarks and open tabs. Everything else, like user settings and add-ons are removed.

When I tell you, use the below instructions to create a new, blank profile. Do not do anything with it at this time.

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profile-manager-create-and-remove-firefox-profiles Windows: 32-bit C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe -p 64-bit C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe -p Mac: Navigate to /Applications/Utilities. Open the Terminal application. In the Terminal application, enter the following: /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin -p Linux: In Terminal run: firefox –P For users who have one or more builds from mozilla.org this will not work. It would be best to have the full path so if you had placed the untared contents in a folder in /home it would be /home/<username>/foldername/firefox/firefox –P An easy way would be not to do it in a terminal but in say a launcher since you have to point it to the firefox script in Firefox folder you can then add –P on end. You can also have the exact "profilename" after the -P so Firefox will start with that Profile.

Now open Firefox normally using your normal profile.

Use the Febe and Opie programs to save your information. As a storage folder, I use C:\<user>\FireFox Backup If you need help, just ask. Save everything you can to the folder you made. Once this is done successfully, close Firefox.

Using the above instructions, open the Firefox Profile Manager. Create a new profile. Once it is set up, We can then restore your profile. Let me know when you are ready.

Hi Fred,

I did what you said in the first post, reset the Signon.importedFromSqlite. The only logins.json files were again with a Internet Explorer logo but I deleted them anyway and restarted Firefox. There still no passwords saved.

The only thing I was not sure about is if you wanted me to create a new profile before doing these steps or after. I have to look at instructions on how to create a new profile. Thanks,

Amy

Hi Fred, I just discovered another problem. I read "Use the Profile Manager to create and remove Firefox profiles" article so I decided to at least take a look at it. Just wanted to get to the Profile Manager and see what was there. If I type firefox.exe in the run box and click OK, Firefox browser opens up. Then I tried option two. I have 64 -bit Windows so I went to :On 64-bit Windows: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -p. I can get to Mozilla Firefox folder but in this folder there is NO firefox.exe file. I only have the Firefox folder application which again brings me to the Firefox browser. Where can I find the firefox.exe file to get into the Profile Manager? Again I have a feeling that this is caused by the places.sqlite file missing. cannot get the Password or Profile manager to work or show up. So how can I make a new profile now? Thank you, Amy

No. You have a problem, and I want to help.

I have an external hard drive to back up my computer. Last back up was a year ago. I know, BAD!!!!!

It could be useful, but we'll wait on that.

I did what you said in the first post, reset the Signon.importedFromSqlite. The only logins.json files were again with a Internet Explorer logo but I deleted them anyway and restarted Firefox.

I'm sorry. My instructions may have confused you. What I had said was;

If you find the files the instructions talk about, copy them to a safe location.
if you wanted me to create a new profile before doing these steps

When I tell you, use the instructions to create a new, blank profile.

I read "Use the Profile Manager to create and remove Firefox profiles" article so I decided to at least take a look at it. Just wanted to get to the Profile Manager and see what was there. If I type firefox.exe in the run box and click OK, Firefox browser opens up.

The Profile Manager can only be accessed via the command line.

On 64-bit Windows: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -p. I can get to Mozilla Firefox folder but in this folder there is NO firefox.exe file.

The Firefox program is there. Your browser is set up to not display known file types (extensions) like TXT, EXE, and so on.

Now read the next message. ( Yes, NASA, I heard you. Be right there  :-> )

Look in your profile folder. Do you see these files; key3.db and signons.sqlite

If you do, COPY them to a safe location. Also see if the other profile folder has these files. If so, rename them by adding .two to the extension. Then copy them to the same safe location.

Next, start Firefox normally using your normal profile. Install the FEBE and OPIE programs I spoke of before. Use these add-ons to create backups of your current system.

Hi Fred,

This is frustrating .I went to RUN and was able to get to:C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe and C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox -p. When I click OK on both of them the browser opens up not the profile manager. What is the -p for? I don't know what else to do. In Windows Xp you could choose to open Hidden files and folders. I don't know how to do that in Windows 7. HELP!!!! Amy

PS: After reading " jscher2000" post that Firefox has to be completely closed to access the Profile manager, I went in to Firefox an exited from the menu. That finally worked, except that the profile manager is empty. Is this a JOKE or what?

Could you explain what you did with the contents of the Old Firefox Data folder again? You said: "I went in and copy and pasted the old folder but that did not bring back anything." Where did you paste?

The profile manager only comes up if all Firefox windows are fully closed. Otherwise, you just get a new window. In order to use the profile manager, exit Firefox completely first. IMPORTANT: DO NOT DELETE ANY PROFILES.

Hi jscher2000,

To tell you the truth I don't really remember anymore what I did. I was following instructions from the Mozilla support article "Back up and restore profile information in Firefox profiles" I believed I copy and pasted it to the new profile folder that shows up in my computer even though it does not show up in the profile manager. That is why I have two profile folders one within the other in my computer.

THIS IS FROM MY POST ABOVE: The other thing I discovered is that I have two profile folders, one within the other with the same name. Folder number one I get to it by going to Trouble Shooting Information and the Show Folder which is: C:\Users\NaME\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\g&*%%.default. The second profile folder is within this first profile folder also called g&*%%.default (not the real file name)

I was finally able to go to the profile manager. I guess I was not closing Firefox completely. My manager file folder is empty. Now what?

Hi Amylogamy, try creating a new profile and copying over the files from within that "buried" profile folder (the one that's nested inside the other one).

Please see this other post for more detailed steps: https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1049285#answer-696554

Since the contents of the Old Firefox Data folder are in a different location now, you'll need to adapt that step to copy from the current location.

Hi jscher 2000,

It is going to take me a few days for me to be able to create a new profile. I have very little computer time during the work week. I really need time to do it right. I did find the Old Firefox Data in My documents folder. I forgot that I sent it to My Documents before I deleted it from the desktop. Then I think I copied it to the profile folder found through the Troubleshooting Information that is why this profile folder is within the first folder. The Old Firefox Data and the one within the Profile Folder are exactly the same. Which one should I use? Questions: Is the new profile folder going to have a different name? You said to write Old Settings. I have NEVER done a new profile so I am not familiar of what it entitles. I guess you are asked to name the new profile? It says that the New Profile Folder Firefox should look like a factory fresh installation. THIS SCARES ME!!!! After refreshing Firefox the page was almost blank with Yahoo and Bing. No Menu bar and no way for me to do anything. That is when I panicked and did a restore point in my computer. I WANTED MY OLD FIREFOX BACK WITH ALL OF MY SETTINGS!!!!!. I got my old Firefox back OK but with no bookmarks or saved passwords. I want to make sure to be able to get my old settings back easily, like My AOL start page and Google search engine. It took me a while to figured out how to get back the Menu bar. It says to select all contents and delete in the new profile folder. EVERYTHING? Then the ONLY thing I copy to this folder is the bookmarks backup. Correct? I just opened this folder right now from the Old Firefox Data and all the bookmarks backups are from January 2012. What happens to the other two years of bookmarks? The first profile folder found in the troubleshooting window has the current 2015 bookmarks backups. Don't you think I should use this profile folder instead of the Old Firefox Data so I could retrieve ALL OF MY BOOKMARKS!!!!! What happened to all of my saved passwords. Are they all lost for good? One of the problems I have right now is that the Password Manager is not working so I cannot save new passwords Would this be fixed in the new profile? Thank you for your patience, Amy

Hi Amylogamy, the procedure I described replaces the complete contents of a new blank profile with the complete contents of the profile that was in effect when you used the Refresh procedure. That is all. It should take less than 5 minutes.

If it works, great. If it doesn't work, you can switch back to using your current profile or try a different way. However, most of your questions do not relate to the procedure I described.

Remember, do not delete any profiles. Only create new and switch between. Do not delete.
