i had bubbledock installing itself by stealth (yes i know better, but it happens) in my Ff browser. now i cant set anythingf as my default homepage.

i've tried:

A) dragging and dropping the "g" icon onto the home icon.

B) manullay typing the google url into general settings tab in options.

it would appear i need a slightly more advanced approach.

it may bee true that a reinstall may be simplest. however, i would rather educate myself in how to fix this.

many thanks to all.

incidently, i'm, rather surpised at having this question posted for a WHOLE WEEK , and surprised at having no replies what-so-ever. (it is the latest version of firefox)

i just wanted to add that the addresses that firefox cannot find are these: http:///?type=hppp

and:

chrome://quick_start/content/index.html

which i believe are ther normal firefox defaults/starts?

i have actually set the defau;lt to google.co.uk, but it wont work anymore.

i am hoping that this may be a simple manual fix, rather than re-installing.

but i willneed to find answers here soon or uninstall altogether.

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar and search for prefs that refer to that chrome URL. You can reset user set (bold) prefs via the right-click context menu to the default value.

You can use the SearchReset extension to reset some preferences to the default values.

Note that the SearchReset extension only runs once and then uninstalls automatically, so it won't show on the "Firefox > Add-ons" page (about:addons).

If you do not keep changes after a restart or otherwise have problems with preferences, see:

i understood the idea of using "about:config, and indeed have actually done this before. however, the instructions above didnt have enough detail. if i had the needede details in mind already, then in effect i would have known how to do this alreay.

what i am hoping to do here is reset first tab as "quick start" or to google search.

i did use the firefox start reset. but i was wishing to learn how to do this manually. thank you however as the start reset extension was a wonderful little concept. and it will be most useful to send the link to it to others.

cor-el probably is not around yet so I will add some questions and comments.

The search reset addon may solve some of your problems, but you may need to use it repeatedly.

  • Are you still having problems ?

I note you have or did have a file user.js That file does not exist by default so unless you created it yourself and understand the content then may be worth posting the content in your next post to see if it gives any clues to the problem.

Google is not always the default search engine. Whatever search engine is selected in the Searchbar is used on other searches including the one on the Homepage. For some users especially in the USA Yahoo is now used by default.

Using menus is usually easier, and for most tasks is recommended instead of resorting to using about:config . Some help articles

yes, same problem still exists. oddly enough my avast just notified me of an "Advanced System Protection" search tool that hyadnt a good reputation. i guess it may be part of advanced systewm care's free package. but unsure. and i appear to have removed this though may need restart laptop.

however when i restart thge browser itself it attempts to load this: http:///?type=hppp

and i still only get this:

"The address isn't valid

The URL is not valid and cannot be loaded.

Web addresses are usually written like http://www.example.com/
Make sure that you're using forward slashes (i.e. /)."

as mentioned above, i'd prefer to manually fix this so as tyo gain a better grasp of and feel for the browser rather than depending on options/menus. although i would use these on a day to day sense.

in short, the problem still exists.

i'v forgotten how to generate a browser log to post here. and i'm not quite sure what is meant by "user.js ". i dont remember posting a previous log on this account.

Did you try to read the linked articles I posted about when mentioning 'user.js

If you look at the right side towards the top you will see Question Details you may need to click the down arrow that shows details collected when you posted.

If the page loading is one of your home pages it will be listed if you follow the instructions on home page settings. The about:config entry will be as a value for the pref browser.startup.homepage That may be overridden by a user.js entry or it could come from something else such as the launcher.

See if this helps you - http://malwaretips.com/blogs/quick-start-new-tab-page-removal/

Although that article says "new tab", stuff like that can easily be changed to affect other internal pages like the Home Page. In the year since that Malware-Tips page was written, that Quick Start has probably morphed and there may be a lot more "carriers" that might have brought that garbage on to your PC. Look hard at every program that is listed in the Control Panel > Programs listing in Windows, and get rid of anything that you don't specifically remember installing your self.

i thought i would add futher, and hopefully slightly more accurate info in this posting. i havnt as yet had time to go through each reply, but i will have done so in the next day or two. and try any all or of the suggestions.

the further info is such: i typed the txt wrongly above. what it actually had in options/settings general tab for home page/ and new tab page was and actually still is "?type=hppp" and as yet i still have no idea how it got there. but whether it is a defect that has occured in my browser, or an "infection" of sorts, it keeps replicating itself each time i start firefox.

i'm sure i did a re-install a few weeks back, but it (?type=hppp) was imported. (if i remember correctly, i dont think i was offered the option of being able to import or not import (though i may be wrong).

if i attempt to change it via general tab in options it will always bring me to the page showing mini windows of my previous session, no matter what i try to do in options and with the settings icon on start page itself

then if i close firefox then reload it, it goes back to "?type=hppp", and it shows again in the field for changing home page url in the options general tab.

i will still for the time being leave it as it is, and read the above replies thoroughly over the next few days and attempt to implement some or all of the given suggestions. many thanks to all so far.
