Firefox keeps downgrading to rel 3.16.13 regularly and requests restart of PC , a couple of days/weeks after an upgrade to latest version. Any comment ?
ever since my laptop got upgraded to Win 7 x64 , and the latest Firefox was installed , occasionally it downgrades to version 3.16.13 (consistently , always to this release !) . Tried deleting Firefox now several times for brand new install. Successfully , uneventfully installs , works fine for a couple of weeks or days and then downgrades again. When it happens , it pops up a message for a reboot and after reboot the 3.16.13 Firefox starts with a request for upgrade and plug-ins. Otherwise Firefox works fine and I very much prefer it to other browsers. Symantec does not indicate any malware on scans on my laptop. Any comment on reasons why it downgrades or how to diagnose this event , would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Philipp, thanks for responding. That is a very interesting question , I do have access to database sandbox but I have not accessed it since the Win 7 upgrade nor do I intend to use it.Otherwise I am not using sandboxes intentionally. Forgot to mention that the automatic upgrade in Firefox's 'options' is unticked.
There was never a Firefox 3.16.13 release. Please try uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox (download the official copy from www.getfirefox.com)
Beg your pardon , mistyped the release number , it was meant to be 3.6.13, as attached. Notwithstanding I will get the sw from the link and reinstall it. May take a couple of weeks to find out if it worked. Some of the downgrades coincided with new releases on the upgrade channel , but as it happend one today as well , that theory is also false. could you also go to the firefox menu ≡ > help ? > troubleshooting information, copy the contents of that page and paste them here into a reply on the forum? this might give us a clue what is going on...

So is it actually installing Firefox 3.6.13 ? or is the useragent just showing as 3.6.13.

Hi James, Thanks for that , as much as I can answer it : What happens on these occasions is that out of the blue I get a message on my laptop 'Firefox needs... reboot your computer yes/no' , see attached image . As soon as rebooted , Firefox shows 3.6.13 in About. It looks that something is reinstalling this version in the background while I am using the laptop , the question is what. (each time then I am forced to upgrade to the latest version and then it happens again , the last time it was 1 day later)
Is Firefox the only thing that gets downgraded or reverted as it sounds like it is being reverted to an earlier setup.
A thought what is the three app.update.url preferences in about:config set to?

Then Search > for Files and Folders -- see how many instances of firefox.exe are on your hard drive. Also see how many Firefox Setup ....exe files you have.
Do you have (security) software installed that might revert the Firefox installation to a previously saved setup?
Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test.

Hi the-edmeister, the search resulted in Firefox.exe - one instance found Firefox Setup - has two instances 12.0 and 20.0. When ending up with rel 3.6.13, I have tried two different paths to bring it up to 'current' 1. help --> about --> check for upgrades and that goes through the 12.0 2. using mozilla site link for upgrade , brings it to latest without interim steps. Either way it downgrades eventually Thanks.
Hi James , I just realized that my first reply only partially answered your question. Here is the second part : So far I did not NOTICE any other downgrades happening but now that you drew my attention to it , I checked my Adobe version and it was suspiciously low (10.0.1 as opposed to the current 11.0.09) even though the Automatic upgrade was set in Preferences. So I upgraded the Reader to the highest revision and turned off the Auto upgrade and set for a notification instead, so that I can keep an eye on any potential downgrade. Thanks.

Tougher questions yours are. All I can see (which I was not aware until you asked) is that an Altiris DAgent is running (checked Processes). It seems to be genuine (as much as I can tell !). Without knowing what it actually does , it might be a corporate vehicle for application deployment , but that is just what I gather after some Google searches.If it is , it could be responsible. I replied to James's request for me to check other 'downgrades' so from now on I will keep a tab on what app versions are current. As far as Safe Mode with Networking is concerned , I could boot into that but need to ask first : As the 'downgrade' interval is rather unpredictable , how long would you suggest I keep booting into Safe Mode ?
