At seemingly random times, firefox freezes, and if clicked the screen goes white and says not responding. At times it makes watching any video impossible. I have tried everything I've seen in help forums. I've removed and reinstalled firefox, adobe, silverlight, realplayer, and anything else forums have suggested. So far the only effective solution I've read about this problem is to switch to google chrome. I'd rather not do this.

Please update to Firefox 32 (Update Firefox to the latest release) and then try resetting Firefox (Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings). After that, update your graphics driver Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL

I followed your instructions with no positive results. It's still freezing and whiting out. It actually took a pretty sizable amount of time to do all of those things, so I am pretty disappointed that it was all useless. Thanks for the suggestion anyway.

Note that your System Details List shows multiple Flash plugins.

  • Shockwave Flash 15.0 r0
  • Shockwave Flash 12.0 r0
  • Shockwave Flash 11.9 r900

You can find the installation path of all plugins on the about:plugins page.

You can check the Flash player installation folder for multiple Flash player plugins and remove older version(s) of the plugin (NPSWF32) and possibly (re)install the latest Flash player.

This has sort of worked. I still get the white out screen, but not as often. The suggestion was helpful, but using firefox is still a pain in the neck sometimes. Thanks.

Still freezing. I followed the instructions and the first thing after restarting I got the white screen and not responding before my homepage was even finished loading. I've gotten the white screen several times since then. Thanks for the idea, but this did not resolve the problem.

Was there a problem when you were in safe mode?

I didn't notice any problems in safe mode, but I only tried a few sites.

Type about:addons<Enter> in the address bar to open your Add-ons Manager. Disable a few add-ons, then Restart Firefox. If the problem continues, disable some more (restarting FF). Continue until the problem is gone. After, you know what group is causing the issue. Re-enable the last group ONE AT A TIME (restarting FF) until the problem returns.

Once you think you found the problem, disable that and re-enable all the others, then restart again. Let us know who the suspect is detective.

Having more than one version of a program may cause issues.

Flash is notorious for not cleaning out the older version as part of an update. Grab the uninstaller from here: Uninstall Flash Player | Windows Uninstall Flash Player | Mac Then reinstall the latest version.

I've gotten this advice before, but I tried it again. The choices I have for addons are always activate, ask to activate, and never activate. All my addons are set to ask to activate. I uninstalled shockwave but I wasn't able to download v15, I downloaded 12.1. The problem continues. I still get not responding messages and white screens.

Those are plugins. Plugins are programs already on the computer. When Firefox starts, it checks for such programs.

In the Add-ons Manager, on the left, select Extensions. Then follow the instructions above.

All of my extensions were already disabled. Still having problems.

Some added toolbar and anti-virus add-ons are known to cause Firefox issues. Disable All of them.

While still in safe mode, poke around safe web sites. Is there a problem?

Restart Firefox and poke around the web. Any problem?

I followed the directions. Firefox was freezing in safe mode as I was trying to do so. All extensions are disabled, all addons set to ask to activate. I went to appearance and I see Default 32.0.2, which says disabled, but I'm not given anything to click except a link that says 'more.' The more prompt doesn't take me to anything to click, it just tells me when it was last updated. Still freezing, even in safe mode.
