Yes I tried safe mode - Firefox would not start, however since then I have found out the culprit is an Nvidia card FX-5200, I installed a video driver for vista 32 bit and that has fixed the problem. While doubtful anybody else will have the same issue, the nvdia driver can be found on their download site search for os=vista. What was strange was that all worked well with original driver (from nvidia support CD that came with card) except with firefox - anyhow problem is now solved !

I might also add I have reinstalled windoze TWICE and same crash on new clean install ! 32 bit of course
Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} While you are in safe mode; Press the Alt or F10 key to bring up the tool bar. Followed by;
Windows; Tools > Options Linux; Edit > Preferences Mac; application name > Preferences
Then Advanced > General. Look for and turn off Use Hardware Acceleration.
Poke around safe web sites. Are there any problems?. Then restart.
