Starting about a week ago, seemingly at random tabs will open on their own. They always try connecting to the URL mentioned in the title. Now, this obviously won't resolve because that isn't a valid URL. This only seems to happen when firefox is already open, and isn't affected by running firefox in safe mode. I've ran some scans and haven't found anything, I've been through my startup processes and nothing is amiss there either. I feel I should also mention that this is only happening in firefox, I've left Internet Explorer open for a few hours to see if anything would happen and nothing did. Funnily enough it's just happened in the time it's taken me to type all of this out. That's about all I can think to add. I hope someone can get to the bottom of this.

Hello,

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information.
Note: This will cause you to lose any Extensions and some Preferences.

  • Open websites will not be saved in Firefox versions lower than 25.

To Reset Firefox do the following:

  1. Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
  2. Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
  3. Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
  4. Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

Further information can be found in the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article.

_____________________________________________________________________________

Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.

You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one.

Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!

This issue seems to have popped up for lots of people lately (including me). I'm assuming it's a bug in one of my plugins/extensions (probably debug code someone forgot to delete), as I can't imagine why malware would do this.

So, we need to narrow down which plugin is doing this. Everyone that has this issue, please post your plugins and extensions info here. You can find your extensions in "about:support" and plugins in "about:plugins"

Saving the about:plugins page doesn't seem to work, and the "attach file" on this forum appears to be broken, so I'll just paste my results here (sorry!):

Hmm...you and I share the same Google plugins, Adblock Plus, FEBE and Greasemonkey. So, if your assumption is right then I'd say it's one of those. Oh, I did all of what was suggested regarding the reset and such and I'm still getting them about once a day, so that hasn't fixed it.

more options

Let's also run down what programs we have in common during this issue. -Firefox (Netflix tab only) -Skype (Recently exited a call, also asked me to rate said call) -Technicpack (Minecraft modpacks) -Geforce Experience -Panda Cloud Antivirus

Addons are Noscript, adblock, out of date adobe/java, Ant Video Downloader.

Hello Catbark, good idea. The only programs I have open regularly that we both share are Firefox and Skype. Both were idle the last time this happened as I was making lunch in another room when it occurred.

more options

Whatever plugin was doing this, it appears to have been fixed.

more options

It could be the work of one of your add-ons, or even add / mal-ware. Look thru your add-ons list and make sure you know what each one is there for. Also, check the programs that are on your computer Windows > Start > Control Panel > Uninstall Programs. (Mac: Open the "Applications" folder) Go thru the list and use a web search to check any that you don't know what they are.

Troubleshoot Firefox Issues Caused By Malware {web link}

more options

I may have an idea if anyone is still interested; I was typing in Skype and an advertisement changed, then a window popped up (I pressed enter at the same time so it went away) "failed to connect to about:xxyyzz"

--Edit: Confirmed; it's the new advertisements in Skype that cause this issue. You can fix it by downloading a previous version of Skype (Whichever you prefer that doesn't have ad's).

ok yeah it seems to be the skype advertisements but what id like to know is if its just one of them or all of them? i think its just one of them as it only happens every now and then which would happen only if it had to cycle thru the ads till it got to that certain one which would cause the problem! so if it truely is just one ad then does anyone know which ad it is and has anyone contacted skype to let them know about this problem? id do it myself but i do not know which ad to let them know is causing problems!

more options

also to SWZT i think the reason its affecting firefox and not internet explorer is because firefox is set to be your default web browser correct? if so could you try setting internet explorer as your default web browser and wait a bit to see if it will open the tab in internet explorer or if it opens it in firefox?

more options

The problem appears to be an interaction between Firefox and Skype (and ActiveX). When I change my focus from Firefox (30.0) to Skype (6.16.0.105) - of course it isn't happening now, but earlier, I would get the attached ActiveX pop-up message. Then, when I clicked OK, the pop-up would disappear, and the about tab you mentioned would open. Now that I think about it, Skype may not have anything to do with it. I'll post again if I figure out how to reproduce the error.

Has anyone else seen this ActiveX message?

more options

I believe it is the Domino's ads because anytime it is up when I start typing in chat it will pop up on me and continue to do so until it changes.

more options

yes im getting that too but not everytime and lately it hasnt been happening maybe someone let skype know and they fixed it?

more options

Just want to add that I am having the same thing happen. Did not even think of it before reading your comments, but mine occurs only when I have Skype open as well. I only have Skype open during calling sessions once a day and this pop-up occurs at least once a week.

This is also the first time that it took me to about:xxyyzz. Usually it takes me to random other websites that make me think that it's malware.

I am also not getting any kind of ActiveX message. I did however just get a popup saying that "Adobe Flashruntime" by "Adobe Systems Incorporated" wants to run, right as FF went to about:xxyyzz.
