What is a plugin?

A plugin is a piece of software that displays internet content that Firefox is not designed to display. This usually includes video, audio, online games and presentations that are made in patented formats. Plugins are created and distributed by the companies that make those patented formats. Some common plugins are Adobe Flash, Apple QuickTime, and Microsoft Silverlight.

What is a crash?

A crash happens when a piece of software abruptly stops working. Plugins sometimes crash for various reasons, and cause Firefox to crash along with it. For more information about Firefox crashes, see Troubleshoot Firefox crashes (closing or quitting unexpectedly). Some plugins load separately from Firefox, allowing Firefox to stay open if the plugin crashes.

What information is sent in a crash report?

Crash reports only include technical information to help Firefox developers determine what went wrong, and how to fix it. These reports do not include personal information. The information sent in a report includes:

• what webpage you were on
• version of Firefox you were using
• your operating system
• installed plugins
• installed extensions
• and more technical info.

This information is subject to the Firefox Privacy Policy.

How do I keep plugins from crashing?

Many problems with plugins can be solved by updating to the latest version of the plugin. The name of the plugin that crashed can be found in the error message.

Breakpoints can trigger Firefox's hang protection. You can disable hang protection by setting dom.ipc.plugins.timeoutSecs to -1. See the Mozilla Developer Network documentation for details.

Private Browsing - Browse the web without saving information about the sites you visit

As you browse the web, Firefox remembers lots of information for you - like the sites you've visited. There may be times, however, when you don't want people with access to your computer to see this information, such as when shopping for a present. Private Browsing allows you to browse the Internet without saving any information about which sites and pages you’ve visited. We'll show you how it works.

What does Private Browsing not save?

• Visited pages: No pages will be added to the list of sites in the History menu, the Library window's history list, or the Awesome Bar address list.
• Form and Search Bar entries: Nothing you enter into text boxes on web pages or the Search bar will be saved for Form autocomplete.
• Passwords: No new passwords will be saved.
• Download List entries: No files you download will be listed in the Downloads Window after you turn off Private Browsing.
• Cookies: Cookies store information about websites you visit such as site preferences, login status, and data used by plugins like Adobe Flash. Cookies can also be used by third parties to track you across websites. For more info about tracking, see How do I turn on the Do Not Track feature?
• Cached Web Content and Offline Web Content and User Data: No temporary Internet files (cached files) or files that websites save for offline use will be saved.

Other ways to control what information Firefox saves

Safe Mode is a special Firefox mode that can be used to troubleshoot and fix problems. Safe Mode temporarily resets some settings and disables add-ons that might be causing problems. By comparing Firefox behavior in normal mode to its behavior in Safe Mode you may be able to pinpoint the cause of the problem.

Once Firefox is in Safe Mode, you'll want to test its behavior and see if the problem goes away.

The problem happens in Safe Mode

If the problem still happens in Safe Mode, it is not being caused by an extension or theme. Other possible causes could be plugins or changes made to Firefox preference settings, which are not disabled in Safe Mode. See the following articles for solution:

The problem does not happen in Safe Mode

Exiting Safe Mode

Firefox hangs or is not responding - How to fix

When Firefox hangs, it stops responding to your clicks and keystrokes and doesn't seem to be doing anything. Also, a "(Not Responding)" label is displayed in the title bar and the mouse becomes a spinning wait cursor when it's over the Firefox window.Also, the mouse becomes a spinning wait cursor when it's over the Firefox window. Firefox hangs at random times

If Firefox seems to hang randomly and not after a specific action (for example, downloading a file or quitting Firefox), try the solutions in this section.

Create a new places database

If hangs are periodic, it may be caused by a corrupted places database.

To create a new places database, do the following:

1. The template "ProfileFolder" does not exist or has no approved revision.
2. Click the Firefox menu and select Exit.Click the Firefox menu at the top of the screen and select Quit Firefox.Click the Firefox menu and select Quit. Wait until Firefox has completely quit.
3. In the Firefox profile folder, find and rename the files places.sqlite to places.sqlite.old and places.sqlite-journal to places.sqlite-journal.old (if it exists).
   • To rename a file, right-click on it and select rename from the menuclick on it once to select it and then click a second time on the file name to make it editable. Then add .old to the end of its name.
4. Finally, reopen Firefox.
   • When Firefox reopens it will create a new places database. Your browsing history will be lost but Firefox will automatically import your bookmarks from the most recent backup file.

Turn off hardware acceleration

With some graphics card and graphics driver setups, Firefox may hang when using hardware acceleration. You can try turning off hardware acceleration to see if it fixes the problem.

1. In the Menu bar at the top of the screen, click Firefox and then select Preferences or Settings, depending on your macOS version.Click the menu button and select Settings.
2. Select the Advanced panel and the General tab.
3. Uncheck Use hardware acceleration when available.
4. Click the Firefox menu and select Exit.Click the Firefox menu at the top of the screen and select Quit Firefox.Click the Firefox menu and select Quit.
5. Start Firefox the way you normally do.

If the problem is no longer happening, then hardware acceleration was likely the cause. You can try updating your graphics drivers to see if that fixes it or simply run without hardware acceleration.

Troubleshoot your plugins

Sites that use plugins such as Java, Adobe Reader, or Flash can cause Firefox to hang. For information on troubleshooting plugins and on determining whether a plugin is causing your problem, see the Troubleshoot issues with plugins like Flash or Java to fix common Firefox problems article.

Delete duplicated Session Restore files

Firefox may be slow to respond or hang if multiple copies of its Session Restore file have been created:

1. Open your profile folder:

   • Click the menu button , click Help and select More Troubleshooting Information.From the Help menu, select More Troubleshooting Information. The Troubleshooting Information tab will open.
   • Under the Application Basics section next to Profile FolderDirectory, click Open FolderShow in FinderOpen Directory. A window will open that contains your profile folder.Your profile folder will open.
   Note: If you are unable to open or use Firefox, follow the instructions in Finding your profile without opening Firefox.

2. Click the Firefox menu and select Exit.Click the Firefox menu at the top of the screen and select Quit Firefox.Click the Firefox menu and select Quit.
3. Locate and delete the sessionstore.js file and any copies, such as sessionstore-1.js, sessionstore-2.js.

Change the PAC implementation

If you're using a proxy auto-config file (PAC), Firefox may hang when you attempt to load sites that don't exist or that you haven't opened recently. To determine if you use an automatic proxy configuration file:

1. In the Menu bar at the top of the screen, click Firefox and then select Preferences or Settings, depending on your macOS version.Click the menu button and select Settings.
2. Click the Advanced icon.
3. Click the Network tab.
4. Click Settings. The Connection Settings dialog appears.
5. If Automatic proxy configuration URL is selected, you are using an automatic proxy configuration file. Do not disable this setting, which will prevent you from accessing the Internet. Instead, provide this workaround to your network administrator.
6. Click Cancel.

Firefox hangs after using it for a long time

Update Firefox

The latest Firefox versions includes improvements in memory usage, especially during long sessions. Update Firefox to the latest version.

Restart Firefox

Firefox may hang if left open for long periods of time. To fix the issue, restart Firefox.

If you regularly leave Firefox open so that you return to where you left off, you may want to use Firefox's Session Restore feature. For more information, see Configuring session restore.

Firefox hangs while loading the first window

Speed up Session Restore

If you have many tabs to restore, Firefox may hang while loading those sites. Make sure that Don't load tabs until selected is checked in the Tabs panel of the OptionsPreferences window so that only the last selected tab is loaded at startup. You can also try to use Tab Groups so that only websites in the visible tab group load first.

Firefox hangs when downloading files or saving images

If Firefox hangs when you attempt to download a file or save an image, try these solutions:

Clear download history

Firefox may hang when downloading files if your download history has grown too large. To clear the download history:

1. At the top of the Firefox window, click on the Firefox button (Tools menu in Windows XP), and then click DownloadsOn the menu bar, click on the Tools menu, and then click DownloadsAt the top of the Firefox window, click on the Tools menu, and then click Downloads. The Downloads window will open.Click the Downloads button and then click Show All Downloads. The Library window will open.
2. Click Clear List. The download history is cleared.Click Clear Downloads to delete the download history.
3. Download some sample files to see if the hanging has stopped.

Choose a different download folder

Firefox may hang if the last download folder location (e.g. a shared volume or USB drive) is no longer available. To fix this:

1. In the Menu bar at the top of the screen, click Firefox and then select Preferences or Settings, depending on your macOS version.Click the menu button and select Settings.
2. Select the General panel.
3. In the Downloads pane, select Save files to and click the Browse button.
4. In the Browse For Folder window, choose a new folder location.
5. Close the Settings page. Any changes you've made will automatically be saved.

See if you are now able to download files or save images. If this works, you can go back to your Firefox settings, if you wish, and select Always ask me where to save my files.

Disable virus scan in Firefox preferences

With some antivirus programs, the virus scan that Firefox starts after files are downloaded may cause Firefox to hang. You can disable virus scanning with the following steps (this will not disable your antivirus program):

1. Type about:config in the address bar and press EnterReturn.
   A warning page may appear. Click Accept the Risk and Continue to go to the about:config page.
2. Locate the browser.download.manager.scanWhenDone preference and double click it to change the value to false.

Firefox hangs when you quit it

Sometimes when you close Firefox, it may stop responding and remain in memory, even though no Firefox windows are open. This can prevent Firefox from working properly the next time you open it or you may see a "Close Firefox" dialog box with the message, Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system.. You must then end all Firefox processes or restart the computer before you can reopen Firefox (see "Firefox is already running but is not responding" error - How to fix for other causes and solutions).

Close Firefox completely

1. Click the Firefox menu and select Exit.Click the Firefox menu at the top of the screen and select Quit Firefox.Click the Firefox menu and select Quit.
2. Close any remaining dialog boxes or secondary windows such as the Downloads window.

If Firefox processes that remain in memory at exit are a recurring problem, try the following solutions.

Troubleshoot your extensions

A problematic extension can cause the problem, which can be resolved by disabling or uninstalling the extension. Update or disable the Java plugin

Sometimes Java applets can cause the Firefox process to persist after exit. Try updating Java to the latest version by going to Mozilla's plugin check page or, if you don't need the Java plugin, you can disable it from the Plugins panel of the Firefox Add-ons Manager. Restore the default home page

If you want to delete your home page customizations, this is the way to do it.

1. In the Menu bar at the top of the screen, click Firefox and then select Preferences or Settings, depending on your macOS version.Click the menu button and select Settings.
2. Select the General panel.
3. In the Startup box, click Restore to Default.
   
4. Close the Settings page. Any changes you've made will automatically be saved.

Firefox crashes - Troubleshoot, prevent and get help fixing crashes

A crash is what happens when Firefox closes or quits unexpectedly. After a crash, you should see the Mozilla Crash Reporter appear. This article will help you fix crashes and show you how to get more help if you're having difficulties.

If Firefox crashes on startup, first check to see if the crash happens in safe mode (see below). Otherwise, follow these steps in order.

Update your software

The crash you're experiencing may have already been fixed in a new version!

Update Firefox

Every Firefox release includes a number of fixes for crashes that people have reported. Making sure you have the latest version may fix your crash. See Update Firefox to the latest release for details.

Update your plugins

Check that you have the latest versions of all your plugins.

• Go to our Plugin Check page and follow the links to update any plugins that are out of date.

Update your drivers

Check if your graphics drivers are up-to-date. For more info, see Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL.

If your crash happens while printing, check that your printer driver is up-to-date by going to your printer manufacturer's support website.

Update your Internet Security software

Make sure you have the latest version of your Internet security software (including firewalls, antivirus programs, anti-spyware programs, and more).

Check to see if the crash happens in safe mode

If updating software didn't work or if Firefox crashes on startup, use the steps below to test whether the crash happens in Firefox Safe Mode or not and then follow the instructions in the recommended articles.

1. Click the menu button , click Help, select Troubleshoot Mode… and click Restart in the Restart Firefox in Troubleshoot Mode? dialog.

   Note: You can also start Firefox in Troubleshoot Mode by holding down the Shift key while starting Firefox.holding down the option key while starting Firefox.quitting Firefox and then going to your Terminal and running: firefox -safe-mode
   You may need to specify the Firefox installation path (e.g. /usr/lib/firefox).
2. When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, press the button Continue in Safe ModeStart in Safe Mode.

After Firefox starts in Safe Mode, test for your problem.

The crash still happens in Safe Mode

If your crash still happens in Safe Mode, it is not being caused by an extension, theme or hardware acceleration. See if Firefox hot topics include a solution and, if it doesn't, try to get help with your crash ID.

The crash doesn't happen in Safe Mode

If your crash doesn't happen in Safe Mode, it is most likely because of an extension, theme or hardware acceleration.

Check your RAM for errors

If Firefox crashes repeatedly, check your RAM for errors using for instance the following tool, Memtest86+Rember.

Get help fixing this crash

Figuring out the cause of a crash can be difficult. If you've tried the steps above and can't get Firefox to stop crashing, the steps below will show you how to collect information about your crash so our volunteers can help you.

1. Get the Report ID of your latest crash report:
   • If you can open Firefox, at least in Safe Mode:
     1. In the Firefox Location bar, type about:crashes and hit EnterReturn. A page listing submitted crash reports will appear.
     2. Right-clickHold down the control key while you click on the latest crash under Report ID and choose Open Link in New Tab. A tab will open to a page on crash-stats.mozilla.com, saying that "Your report is being processed". When it is finished processing, close the report tab.
   • If you can't open Firefox because it crashes at startup even in Safe Mode:
     1. Click the Windows Start button, and select Run…press + R. Type in "%APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Crash Reports\submitted" (including the quotation marks) and click OK.(OS X 10.6 or previous) Click the Finder icon in the dock. Your home folder will be selected. In the right side of the window, click the Library folder to open it. Then open the "Application Support" folder, the "Firefox" folder, the "Crash Reports" folder and finally the "submitted" folder.
        (OS X 10.7 or above) Click the Finder icon in the dock. On the menu bar, click the Go menu, hold down the option or alt key and select Library. A window will open containing your Library folder. Then open the "Application Support" folder, the "Firefox" folder, the "Crash Reports" folder and finally the "submitted" folder.Go to ~/.mozilla/firefox/Crash Reports/submitted.
     2. In the resulting folder will be a text file for each crash report you have submitted. Using the View menu, arrange them by date to find out which is the newest file; and double-click on it to open it.

3. Create an account.
4. Fill out the Details section of the next page with as much information you have about the crash. Include any of the steps you completed above, like updating Firefox or testing for the crash in safe mode.
5. Copy the long Report ID number you've got above for the latest crash (looks like bp-…) and paste it into the "Details" section.
6. Click the green Automatically add button to submit additional troubleshooting information.
7. Finally, click the Post Question button.
