I'm really trying to get used to the tabs on top but I'm finding it's counter-intuitive and they are harder to see. I don't want to install an add-on because my experience with add-ons is that eventually they cause memory leaks and you have to spend time troubleshooting and possibly disabling them.

People are traditionalists so if you want to implement new function/design you should add possibility to switch to old one if user isn't feeling comfort with. As i say Theme restorer is my solution for now. It's good enough to make me to not migrate to other browser
