How to remove unlinked labels from bookmark organization ?

Deleting accumulated labels for deleted bookmarks

Good day,

I organize my bookmarks progressively, categorizing them by folders and labels. The labels are stored (libraries - above all the bookmarks) within their respective folder "labels". I deleted some bookmarks a few days ago and noticed that I am unable to delete the labels which have accumulated and been automatically recorded in the "Labels" folder.

How can I delete these numerous labels that are no longer linked to any bookmarks ?

Thank you for your responses and suggestions.

Hi korb, those should have been cleaned up automatically, but something has gone wrong somewhere. Firefox has a database maintenance function called "Verify Integrity" that hopefully can fix it. That's here:

Open Firefox's Troubleshooting Information page using any of these methods:

  • "3-bar" menu button > Help > More Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > More Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

Near the bottom, there is a section titled Places Database -- that's the file which stores history and bookmarks. Click the button labeled Verify Integrity. There may be a 10-15 second delay before results appear.

If all is well, the report that appears below the button should start with:

> Task: checkIntegrity
+ The places.sqlite database is sane
+ The favicons.sqlite database is sane
> Task: invalidateCaches
+ The caches have been invalidated
> Task: checkCoherence
+ The database is coherent

Any improvement after running this routine?

Statistiques

After having opened the Firefox "Troubleshooting Information" page and clicked the "Verify Integrity" button in the "Places Database" section, I have obtained a result similar to the following:

Code The places database integrity check completed successfully. No errors were found.

If the result indicates that no errors were found, this signifies that the bookmarks database was verified successfully and that any orphaned labels have been automatically deleted.

However, should the result indicate that there were errors, I may share those details in my message. Providing the exact information displayed will allow those assisting me to better understand the problem and suggest appropriate solutions. Now that the issue persists, what would you recommend I do? If the result of the "Verify Integrity" function indicated that there were errors, I would be happy to share those details so that those assisting me can better understand the problem and suggest appropriate solutions. I am open to any guidance you may provide to resolve this matter regarding the accumulated labels for my deleted bookmarks. Your expertise and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi korb, that was the only tool I'm aware of to clean up bookmarks automatically. Does it make any difference to restart Firefox using the "Clear startup cache..." button on Use the Troubleshooting Information page to help fix Firefox issues?

Hello jscher2000 ,

I am most grateful for your assistance in resolving this issue, the cause of which I cannot fully explain.

Utilizing the "Clear startup cache..." button has not provided any additional resolution to this peculiar obstruction. Being on version "128.9.0esr 64 (bits)", it is possible that an update may resolve what must be referred to as a "bug". This in no way impedes the functioning, extensions, and add-ons from responding perfectly.

I shall, therefore, close this subject in a few days without clicking on "resolved".

Sincerely yours.

I had the same issue a while back. Some old labels just stayed there even after I deleted the bookmarks they were linked to. What I did was:

Went into the labels section manually and removed the ones I didn't need anymore.

If your browser doesn’t have a direct option, sometimes using a bookmark manager extension helps. A few of them can find and clean up unused labels for you.

Worst case, I exported my bookmarks, cleaned up the labels in a text editor, and imported them back. Bit of a hassle but it worked.

Would help if you mention which browser or manager you're using — might be an easier fix for that specifically.

Hope this helps!

Good day, Bottleneck Calculator.

I appreciate your response and the positive suggestions I have carefully read.

I am on 128.10 ESR Firefox. I have tried everything, and nothing works:

 > I manually went into the labels section and removed the ones I no longer needed.

Yes, of course, this does not work despite having this option.

 > Using a bookmark manager extension.
Yes, this is an interesting suggestion that I will follow.
 > Worst case, I exported my bookmarks, cleaned up the labels in a text editor, and imported them back. Bit of a hassle, but it worked.

However, my issue is not to replace or delete the labels associated with the bookmarks, but to delete those that are no longer associated with the bookmarks (see the image uploaded in the first message). The export works well, the deletion of bookmarks and folders also works, and the management of labels on existing bookmarks also works.

I did not have the courage to report this malfunction to Mozilla as a bug. I thank you for your responses, your help, and your suggestions.

Sincerely.

Good day, Bottleneck Calculator. I have tried 5 bookmark manager extensions following your suggestion, and none of them have allowed me to manage the excessive labels. Thank you for your assistance and for sharing your knowledge
