This evening, I was prompted to update to the latest version of Firefox, so I went ahead with it. I wasn't expecting it to create an entirely new install, rather than overlaying the current one. I went ahead with the instructions to copy info from my old profile to the new, but when I close the new browser and relaunch, none of my old info (bookmarks, open tabs, etc.) is there. I had copied all the files listed in the article.

The old install was to the C: drive. I did not have enough space on C:, so I installed the new to D:. Looks like, in spite of that, the profile files went to the usual location on C:. I don't know if that is the issue or not, but I need some help figuring this out. Grateful for any guidance you can offer.

Chosen solution

Thanks for your response. I decided to just uninstall the installation on drive D:. It appears that my old install is updated to ver 76, and everything appears to be as it was, so I'm OK. Thanks again.

Hi, Firefox might have created a new Profile, but it shouldn't have created a new installation - the old one should have been overwritten. Maybe it happened because your C drive was full - can you not free up a little space? See if you can select your original Profile - you don't need to copy any data to the new one. Changing the drive might cause problems.

Please see Recover user data missing after Firefox update.

Note that if you make changes to your Profile you should do it with Firefox closed. If you didn't, you must restart Firefox afterwards.

Firefox uses two locations for the Firefox profile folder, so make sure to look in the correct location. Location used for the main profile that keeps your personal data (Root Directory on about:profiles).

  • C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\

Location used for the disk cache and other temporary files (Local Directory on about:profiles).

  • C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\
