My bookmarks will not "sort by name" within a folder, even though I use the right-click option for this. If I move them manually, they will not stay where I put them.

That about sums it up. This function has always worked, until a few weeks ago. Haven't done anything, adding software, etc., that I can think would have this effect.

If you are doing that in the Library List like from Bookmarks > Show ALL Bookmarks ("Ctrl+Shift+B") then that list is strictly temporary and you do not have a problem so skip steps 1) and 2) below and see how to really sort bookmarks with an extension.

If you are doing this in the Bookmarks Sidebar ("Ctrl+B") or the bookmarks menu, then you do have a problem.

1) Try this first: -- if you do have a problem

(In Firefox 4 and above Safe Mode can be done through the Help menu > Restart with Addons Disabled follow directions exactly -- I prefer the manual method (rename not delete) myself, and I keep a copy of a freshly renewed file)

Corrupt localstore.rdf - MozillaZine Knowledge Base "Before continuing you may wish to save a screenshot of your Firefox toolbar customizations, to help you restore them later. " http://kb.mozillazine.org/Corrupt_localstore.rdf

2) Step 2 if the above fails

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Locked_or_damaged_places.sqlite

But start try the method at the bottom first, "Problems limited to bookmarks", creating a bookmark backup, then restoring it -- no sense in destroying your history if there is a possible solution that does not do damage.

But your method of sorting bookmarks would be greatly improved if you installed the "SortPlaces" extension and used bookmark separators where necessary..

The Views menu in the Bookmarks Manager (Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks) is for displaying the bookmarks in different sorting orders (hence the name Views) and doesn't sort bookmarks permanently.

In Firefox the option to sort bookmarks is only available for folders and not for individual bookmarks.
Right-click a folder to open the context menu and choose "Sort By Name" in the left pane of the Bookmarks Manager or in the side bar to sort the bookmarks alphabetically or drag bookmarks to the wanted position.
If dragging doesn't work then use Cut and Paste instead.

Shouldn't 'Sort By Name' for permanent placement be in the 'Organize' drop menu and not just a context menu?
