I downloaded Firefox 5 and now my browser window is solid black. I can't see anything at all except my home page at start-up, which is Google search. Anywhere I go on the web, favorites or type in link, its all just a solid black screen

What is the actual url of the Google page you have for your home page.

Firefox changed the default home page to one that is actually on your computer that can be brought up with about:home which refers to their default home page not to your choice of the home page like your "Home" toolbar button would be.

The blank page can be brought up with about:blank try both of those to see what happens.

I wonder if you black screen is from a theme with a black background.

First of all, thanks for your help! The home is the Firefox default, not the page I thought it was. The window now seems to be fine as long as I don't use Fox Tabs, once I click that, the screen gos black and I have to restart Firefox to see anything. I could just stop using Fox Tabs but I love em.

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

In Firefox 4 Safe mode disables extensions and disables hardware acceleration.

  • Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"

If disabling hardware acceleration works then check if there is an update available for your graphics display driver.

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

In Firefox 4+ versions you can use one of these methods to start in Safe mode:

  • On Windows, hold down the Shift key while starting Firefox with a double-click on the Firefox desktop shortcut
  • Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

Try to disable hardware acceleration.

If disabling hardware acceleration works then check if there is an update available for your graphics display driver.
