Hi,

We appreciate your feedback on the recently redesigned Firefox browser.

We set out in 2021 to reimagine Firefox's design to be fast, modern and inviting. With the latest 89 release, we’re bringing you a modern new look designed to streamline and calm things down so you have a fresh new web experience every time you use Firefox.

Why is the top border with Menu bar now all light grey? I want FF to look like it always had but then I'm just a user. I was a loyal user that recommended FF to all my friends and associates but that's ended as of now. Take this new look and shove it where the sun don't shine. I'm switching to some other browser. I shouldn't need to spend time reconfiguring what updates and patches destroy. I hate this new look!

Hi trev, new code is needed to position the tabs below the address bar and/or bookmarks toolbar. Could you look in on the following thread to see what they come up with:

https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1338147

If you are asking is the word "chrome" in userChrome.css, I have info on that here: https://www.userchrome.org/what-is-userchrome-css.html#rq

One some of the other points:

(1) how do i get rid of the blue starred edit bookmark which is of no use to anyone ?

You would need to hide it in your userChrome.css file. For example:

#page-action-buttons #star-button { display: none !important; }

(2) dark mode as its too bloody dark , without changing my 'theme' ?

The built-in themes are not adjustable. You can find an add-on theme or use this extension to build your own:

https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/firefox-color/

(3) the crap surround on tabs ? i know which tab i'm on , or even change the colour at least .

Maybe the Firefox Color extension can fix that? If not, userChrome.css. You could ask on

https://www.reddit.com/r/FirefoxCSS/

(4) the line beneath tabs that goes along the whole screen ?

Hmm, I use a light theme and don't see that. Probably same answer as #3.

(5) 'page info' back to where it was before it was moved for no reason what so ever ?

Do you mean on the right-click context menu? That's complicated. CSS can't do that, and add-ons can't trigger it. You would need to use a startup script and that introduces some new risks. For now, the keyboard shortcut probably is easiest (Ctrl+i, or on Mac, Command+i).

Were you using the "Default" theme of Firefox 57-88 which had a dark navy top color? Someone posted an add-on theme to emulate that. You could give it a try:

https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/photon-colors/

seems , as usual , that updates are done without any thought on the users needs . every time theres a tweak we end up on here asking how to revert back , not a good service is it really ? fire fox should be better for us to use , change and get rid of what we dont want easily without having to come on here to ask what they are in the first place and then trying to take them off. i have no idea about chrome css either so thats no help to me or many other people . the blue star , when just above is bookmark this page , so the blue star is of no use , so why bother putting it there ? esier just to go to google chrome and cut out the middle man . firefox used to be good and original but its turned into a sheep and following everyone else without actually considering its users , like evryone else .

The unfortunate thing is that – as you must have seen from many threads on here over the last couple of days – for a lot of users, the new look doesn't calm things down. In fact, it's the opposite: it's a source of stress, annoyance and impaired usability.

It's good that there is a preference to revert Proton for now, and personally I think I'll be able to get to a livable Proton experience using userChrome.css (hugely grateful to jscher2000's pointers on this).

However, it's clear that for a large proportion of users, the new look isn't welcome or inviting.

Could we please get an acknowledgement of the feedback and understand what plans Mozilla has to address it and increase user satisfaction with the next release?

i'll wait for update 90 and see what other unwanted crap is put on, wait a while until someone works out the aboutconfig , then get it looking decent and not the eye sore it is now . if fire fox keep letting us down with badly thought out designs i will use something else in future , getting fed up with all the rubbish and still no tabs below , shows firefox doesnt listen or just plain arrogant and stubborn. dont for get , other sites keep changing for the worse too , so we have to keep getting used to those updates too , instead of just browsing away like we want we have to work out where everything has been moved to , facebook and imdb are the worst culprits , obviously not forgetting FF .

still no answer on getting rid of the BLUE STAR . if ff want to give us crap at least tell us how to make it look good. seems update 89 is hated by so many and deservedly so .

Hi trev, the "Bookmark This Tab" star button turns blue when the current page has been bookmarked. I am not aware of a built-in way to hide this button. Please refer to my reply earlier in this thread about a userChrome.css workaround. Do you want to try that?

no point , if the option to turn off proton is going soon in the dreaded 90 update , then i am off . there too many things that need changing in this update and we all know ff wont do a damn thing. with all these complaints and being ignored by them , yet again , fire fox is getting what it deserves when it loses a ton load of users . ff wanted to win back the users it lost to other browser ( probably due to not liking firefox updates) from other browsers , which ff is copying , so might as well use the original instead of a cheap immitation . this update has buggered ff up big time

I know you think that you are being helpful, but you are not. Lots of people, and most seniors first have no idea what you are talking about with your "code" suggestions. Second, in my senior experience, any time that I have attempted to do anything such as you suggested the result has been that my laptop is rendered useless. Even more functions become screwed up. It is time for seniors to find a way to fight back against the ageism that FIREFOX has fully embraced with version 89. It is time for people in charge of FIREFOX to realize that most people want to use their computers for end directed purposes. NOT because they, like some who post, and evidently those who cooked up 89, think it fun and satisfying to spend their time interacting with a machine. We don't like "code". It is not enjoyable for us to manipulate or write or have anything to do with "code". If FIREFOX wants to be a browser used only by 25 year olds, keep- it up. 89 might get me off to another browser just for self-preservation. It is horribly unusable. A complete ruination of FIREFOX. I'm astounded that FIREFOX people could so cluelessly dump this on older users.

Hi edsgraves, I understand you are upset about changes in Firefox 89, but this thread is about the "star" icon in the address bar, which is no longer removable (its old home, the Page Actions menu with the ••• button is gone). If you need to remove the star, then unfortunately that involves creating a userChrome.css file. Is this an important issue for you?

how about someone goes to fire fox and tells them how crap the update is ? so many helpers on here , wouldnt it be better to show ff what you have to answer on these threads instead of trying to help , which is appreciated by the way , not your fault ff is crap , that way they might see for themselves how many users they are losing .

Firefox 89 uses dark mode for menus and internal pages based on certain characteristics of your theme.

For example, the Photon Colors theme has a dark top bar but a light background for the other bars, similar to the last "Default" theme. It has dark menus but internal pages are light. https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/photon-colors/

If all of the toolbars are dark, then I think that triggers Firefox to also dark theme the internal pages. I haven't studied this in detail.

Hello Seburo,

"Fast" is not necessarily an attribute of an UI, and "Proton" is rather confusing and apalling than modern and inviting. In my book. I might be wrong, but I see how many threads are being opened here, and how angry and irritated people appear to be since that Proton "design innovation". Sorry to say, as a firefox user from day one it´s the first time ever I found the need to express my irritation. I´m very unhappy with that Proton UI. I had it for several days when it finally annoyed me so much that I had to look for a solution. That´s the point: to some changes in UI users get used to after a while. This one: didn´t happen for me. It´s just bad design. Please bring back the proven one and don´t surprise users with half-baked funny ideas. You´ll lose a fan community with jokes like these.

Speaking of jokes: Ever tried to submit feedback to the mozilla guys directly? It takes a master´s degree to figure out...

I have a big THANK YOU to "jacobhkyle" creating "Classic System Theme" to replace the awful "new" UI brought to us by unthinking, uncaring Firefox developers with their latest update. They can muck with a lot of things but the UI should not be one of them. Here's link to it:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/classic-system-theme/

Because of it, I'm able to use Firefox again. I thank Jacob immensely for his work!
