My "content type" panel in Options/Applications is blank - how do I set up to select Acrobat in lieu of browser?

I have tried to follow instructions in "mozilla support" but none are applicable. When selecting Options / Applications the panels are completely empty - no application type is shown so no default application can be selected. I have tried to reload "repair" by loading over the existing installation with no improvement.
