When I want to send an email,my list of contacts and their email addresses is no longer showing on the left of my screen, how do I get this back.
I hit the X in the upper right hand corner of my contacts list when I was in the write tab of my email. I know there is a way to get my contact list to show again, but how?

Yes, you need to be in the Write window for F9 to work.
I don't know what a "sound bar" is, but you may have installed or activated something that has pre-empted or stolen the F9 key action.
I don't know how anyone uses Thunderbird without the menus. Again, in the Write window, press alt to activate the menu, and IIRC under View you should find an option to display the Contacts Sidebar.

It is called the Contact Pane. Pressing F9 toggles it on and off.
I pressed F9 several times, it shows the sound bar and the contact pane didn't come back on.
You'll only see it in the Write window.
I know that I only see it in the Write window, but it's not there. Do I need to be in the Write window when I press the F9, if so I have done this and all I seem to get is the sound bar no contact pane. Is there another way to get this back.
There is no sound bar in Thunderbird so I have no idea what you are doing.
Yes you need to have a Write window open and be the active window. Since you cannot make F9 work, select View from the menu bar and check Contact Sidebar. Once again you must do this in a Write window.
